$74.5 Million Powerball-Winning Ticket Sold In Halifax County

Officials say the winning ticket in last night's Powerball drawing was sold in Halifax County.

The ticket is worth more than 74 million dollars, but the winner has yet to come forward. It's the first winning ticket sold in the state since North Carolina joined the multistate drawing on May 30th.

North Carolina Education Lottery director Tom Shaheen says the retailer won't be identified until lottery officials complete security and other checks.

The ticket was the only one to match all five numbers -- two, eight, nine, 12 and 19 -- and the Powerball number 25. The winner has the option to take the payout in annual payments over 30 years or as a lump sum worth more than 36 (m) million dollars in this instance.

A ticket that matched the first five numbers, earning a 200-thousand dollar prize, also was sold in North Carolina.

The winners have 180 days to claim their prizes.
