An accident that involved a military vehicle required East Care to fly a woman to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville all the way from Onslow County.

Highway Patrol Trooper J.D. Kirk says 23-year-old Mellisa Kaye Young of Hubert in Onslow County rear-ended a light armored vehicle, or LAV, from Camp Lejeune on Highway 24, near Kellumtown Rd. The accident happened around 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

Troopers say there's no sign that Young tried to brake at all as the military vehicle slowed to turn right into a Camp Lejeune training facility off Highway 24. The military vehicle was driven by Pfc. Daniel Treadway, who is stationed at Camp Lejeune. Trooper Kirk says there were three or four military vehicles headed to the tactical landing zone when the accident happened.

One of Young's passengers was flown to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Another went to the Naval Hospital aboard Camp Lejeune. Young was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. Trooper Kirk says she was alert and talking.

Trooper Kirk says alcohol is factor in the crash and that Young submitted to blood tests. He says Young will be charged, but the exact charges are pending.

Responding to CS Location, please don't refer to drunk driving deaths since there wasn't one. It is a shame there were injuries, but it's a blessing that injuries heal. Let this be a reminder to us all, SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES and DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. The driver and passengers alike need our prayers.
