The old joke goes, "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" "Practice, practice, practice." For the Hickory High School orchestra, the real answer is "By bus."
The group went to New York over the weekend not just to see the inside of the famous concert hall, but to play there. They performed a 25-minute program of works by a variety of composers.
Orchestra director Sarah Rocco Ross says the group takes a trip every two years to give the students an opportunity to play in different venues. Their last trip to New York was in 1999, and since then they've played in New Orleans and Williamsburg, Virginia. Ross says it's a nice change from playing in the school gym.
