A winter weather advisory has been issued for all of eastern Carolina except Carteret, Onslow, and Duplin counties through 4am Friday. Rain and light sleet continues to fall through the area. Temperatures are still about freezing.
Authorities have seized 2 million dollars and at least 50 video poker machines during a raid targeting illegal gambling operations in western North Carolina.
Alcohol Law Enforcement agents raided 21 businesses, including bars and convenience stores, a storage warehouse and the homes of two businessmen as part of an investigation spanning 18 months. No charges have been filed so far.
A-L-E supervisor Ron Kaylor says complaints from the public led agents to focus on an operation that involved illegal cash payouts from video poker. Kaylor says especially upset were people whose family members lost hundreds of dollars to video poker machines.
Kaylor says 50 agents and two investigators from Buncombe County seized about 2 (m) million dollars believed to be illegal proceeds, including money hidden around a Henderson County home.
The state is phasing out video poker, and will ban it completely in July.
