Traffic should be moving much better along Highway 17 in Jacksonville.

The state Department of Transportation now says all lanes are open again.

A sink hole closed three of the six lanes on Tuesday. The D.O.T. says the 3-foot by 6-foot deep hole was most likely caused by a leak in an underground drainage system.

Crews had to wait for a concrete-like fill to harden before it could be covered by asphalt and the road reopened.

Previous Story

A sink hole that showed up in a center turn lane of U.S. 17 in Jacksonville has shut down three lanes of the busy highway.

Three lanes of the six lane highway have been closed off, just south of the Henderson Drive intersection.

DOT district engineer Robert Vause says the hole was about six feet deep by some three feet wide.

He says it appears to have been caused by a leaking underground drainage system that ate away up to the pavement.

Vause says they filled the hole with a concrete-like fill and will then top that off with asphalt before the road can reopen.
