An early morning accident involving an off-duty police officer has killed a community college employee in Lenoir County.
State troopers say a pickup truck driven by an off-duty Pink Hill police officer crossed the center line and hit another vehicle head-on. A third vehicle was also involved.
Lenoir Community College President Brantley Briley says 57-year-old Wilda Turner, an employee in their payroll division, was killed in the crash.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver of the pickup truck is 34-year-old Michael Hoffman, a full-time Pink Hill police officer and part-time Lenoir County EMS employee. Hoffman has been released from Lenoir Memorial Hospital.
The wreck happened on Highway 11 across from the Kinston Drag Strip.

In response to all posts-To those of you that have Mike in your thoughts and prayers and thoughts, Thank you. To those of you that are negative, you need to understand one thing-the uniforms that he wears don't make him superhuman or anything else. To those of you that think nothing will happen to him-you are so wrong. Something life-shattering happened to him that morning. My son has always been the kind of person that has helped anyone around him that needed him. He's a "shirt off of his own back" kind of person. His friends and family (and several other people that don't know him) know this. I actually know some of the Turner family and they are good people. My heart goes out to them. As for the uniform, I wear one-his sister wears one-his brother wears one-as does his father. We are all public servants and even though most of the time, we aren't treated at a higher standard, the public expects us to be scrutinized at one. He has been paying for this accident every moment since. HFIG

To the "mother of two" let me address you,it is not school time. Many people live comments and grammar is not perfect. As long as I got my point across and you understood what I said, and from your comment seems as if you did.Of course he would be judge at a higher standard he's a "COP" everyone expect better. But if it was a "Medical" condition of course not. You put yourself in a family where a family member life was taken prematurely by someone else.Mistake or not a mistake you gonna want justice or you just cold-hearted and don't care. So to all the families "May God Be With You."

First I want to say that this is a tragic accident for all families involved, and my heart bleeds of pain for everyone. I dont know any of the families, but would like to address "awesome" First let me start by saying you should really go back to school, you have no clue on how to make a complete sentence make sense, second, you say that Mr. Hoffman needs to be treated just like everyone else, that I completely agree on, when reading these comments it sounds as though he is being held at a higher standard because of his job, so yes, treat him like a normal human not hold him to higher standards because of the career he decided to go in. Take your own advise "awesome" and stop throwing in the "cop" card. God Bless you Avery and Turner families, allow God to heal your hearts and mend your minds. Hoffman family, you are in our prayers and you also, allow God to heal your heart and know that you have many people that pray for all families. God Bless
