Rising costs may keep a proposed high-rise bridge from spanning the Cape Fear River between Wilmington and Brunswick county.
The North Carolina Turnpike Authority has proposed the bridge as a toll-supported southern crossing. But an August estimate put the so-called Cape Fear Skyway's costs as high as 900 million dollars.
The bridge, part of a proposed new nine-mile highway, would rise 225 feet above the Cape Fear and its supports would reach more than 500 feet. Some residents in nearby neighborhoods oppose the project because they don't want a major highway going through the area.
Officials expect to find out by mid-December if the bridge is financially feasible.
