Authorities say a Marine gunnery sergeant whose vehicle struck and killed a man who had stopped to help a stranded driver will face misdemeanor charges.
Gunnery Sergeant James Reilly the Second of New Bern is charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and a seat belt violation.
he charges followed the October 31st death of Robert Alan Neal, who had stopped to help 19-year-old Samantha Ray Tombs of New Bern. Her car had stalled on a bridge over the Neuse River.
The state Highway Patrol says Neal was standing between Tombs' car and his pickup truck when Reilly's truck was struck from behind.
