A State Board of Education committee is recommending Bear Grass High School in Martin County be granted charter school status.
The committee voted Tuesday and recommended the schools for the three available charter school spots in the following order: Lake Lure Classical, Rutherford County; Henderson Collegiate, Vance County; and Bear Grass Charter, Martin County.
Six schools are vying for three charter school spots. The state has a cap of 100 charter schools.
The N.C. House of Representatives has passed a bill that would allow 106 charter schools in the state. That would give all of the schools vying for charters this year the opportunity to become a charter. However, the bill needs to pass the N.C. Senate and be signed by the governor before becoming law. It is currently in the committee level of the N.C. Senate.
Previous Story:
A group of parents working to keep a local high school open, though their school board voted to close it, will be watching what happens at the state school board level Tuesday.
A State Board of Education committee meets today to vote on charter schools to be recommended to the full state board. Some parents in Martin County have proposed the state convert Bear Grass High School into a charter school. That's after the Martin County School Board voted to close Bear Grass last year to merge it with another county high school.
Bear Grass is one of six schools vying for three spots. The official announcement of which three get the charter school status is scheduled for July 10.
