They want justice for nearly 950 of their fellow tribe members, who in the 1700's during the War of Tuscarora, were killed or sold for slavery at Fort Neheroka in Snow Hill. The site known as Fort Neheroka is located outside of Snow Hill is used as farmland today... Mainly to grow soybeans. In 1995, the Mewbern family, who now owns the land, allowed East Carolina University students to excavate the area, bringing up boxes of remains, something tribe members are not happy about. They want the land their fellow men perished on to be turned over to them. A community meeting has been set up in Snow Hill Thursday night to discuss the matter.
