Authorities say two people are dead and two more were injured in a plane crash today near the Statesville Regional Airport.
A witness who lives near the airport told the Statesville Record and Landmark that he heard the plane's engine revving and sputtering just before the crash. Frank Bryan, who is himself a pilot, said it sounded as though the plane was running out of gas.
Statesville Police Chief Steve Hampton confirmed that the two died when the plane went down at about 12:15 p-m. Officials say one of the survivors was critically injured. None of the victims' names was immediately released.
