Crews are trying to put out a fire at PCS Phosphate this afternoon.

Beaufort County Emergency Management Director John Pack tells WITN News that it started out as a brush fire and spread to some nearby scrap plastic piping. Pack says that plastic is causing a lot of thick black smoke in the area.

Less than two acres caught fire and Pack says crews have it now surrounded.

Fire crews from Aurora and Blounts Creek are at the scene and are using foam to put out the fire.

Pack says there is no health concern for the smoke itself, while crews are making sure the runoff from the fire does not make its way into the river.
