Officials at Methodist College in Fayetteville are thinking about changing the school’s name from “college” to “university.”
The school’s board of trustees will look at the issue this weekend at its annual retreat at a Wrightsville Beach resort.
Board chairman Al Cleveland says the most likely change would be to Methodist University. Another idea is Eastern Methodist University.
The school opened in 1960 and has more than 2100 students. It has undergraduate and graduate programs.
If officials decide to change the name, Methodist College wouldn’t be the first North Carolina school to do so. Elon College became Elon University about five years ago.
