Rescue teams planned to scale back their search today for a minor league baseball player missing since his canoe overturned this past weekend on the New River in Virginia.
Boat crews, search dogs and about 100 volunteers scoured a
remote area of the river yesterday for Erik Walker of Clemmons.
Walker is a former star pitcher at U-N-C Charlotte and the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays drafted him this year. He's been playing for their
minor league team in New York state.
Walker lost his grip on the canoe after it overturned Saturday
afternoon in the Molly Shoals section of the river, about two miles
from the North Carolina border. His female companion swam to shore
and called for help.
