Elizabeth City Deputy City Manager Alleges He Was Unjustly Fired

A lawsuit filed by a former deputy city manager in Elizabeth City alleges he was unjustly fired because he is black and because of comments he made to the local newspaper.

Reggie Goodson's lawsuit seeks a jury trial.

Goodson says city officials, the majority of whom were white,
violated his civil rights, broke state personnel laws, unjustly
retaliated against him and created a hostile work environment.

Goodson is now a Raleigh attorney. He claims the firing caused
him "severe emotional distress, pain and suffering, fear, anxiety,
embarrassment, discomfort and humiliation." He says he is entitled
to damages which aren't specified.

Goodson said that he received a letter on September fifth, 2003,
that said he was fired for talking to the Daily Advance about city
government issues and for problems in the city's planning office.

City Manager Rich Olson says the lawsuit is being handled by an
insurance carrier for the city and declined comment.
