Caught On Tape, One Family Becomes Storm Chasers For The Day
Most people's first reaction when they see a twister would be to get out the way! But that's not the case for one family in Vanceboro, Craven County. It's not something you see every day, twister off of NC 43 and it's all caught on tape. By 16 year old Keaton Smith and his father Randy.

Smith said, "I was watching Marvin Daugherty and he said there was a circulation over Honolulu moving east, so I thought I'd try to intercept it"

And that's when Smith grabbed his son and headed to Highway 43 where they ran right into the twister.

Smith said, "The dust at the bottom kept rolling and rolling and we could look up and see pine trees 30 to 40 feet tall just swallowing around about us, it's crazy"

Randy's wife Jewel says she didn't try to stop her boys.

And these storm chasers say they won't be stopping their filming any time soon.

I said I wouldn't do it again but I did. Took my brother-in-law from Maine with me this time. Saw the one that was near WCHS but didn't get nearly as close to it as I did the one in Calico. He comes from a place that may only have 1 or 2 thunderstorms a year, so this was exceptionally exciting for him. First time for the huge hail too so it was pretty cool. For you mommies who want to protect your brood. Just wrap your arms around your kiddie and don't let them do anything.
