University officials and some top lawmakers have backed a proposed dental school at East Carolina University, but some dentists don't like the idea.
A survey sponsored by the North Carolina Dental Society found
that half of the organization's members oppose the proposed dental
Supporters say the school will help ease the state's shortage of
dentists in rural and underserved areas.
Society president Doctor Rex Card says some dentists are
concerned that the new school in Greenville could create more
competition in the existing market and could result in an
oversupply of dentists.
East Carolina University submitted a proposed curriculum this
month to the University of North Carolina system's Board of
Governors, which could vote on the new program next month.
