How Much Help Will "NC RX" Offer?

How much will a new statewide prescription program called "NC RX” really help senior citizens?

Mary Forlines of Pitt County says she spent $651.00 on prescription drugs this past Sunday and that's not even enough to last until the end of the year.

Each year, Forlines and her husband, both of whom are in their 80s, estimate even with assistance from Medicare, they shell out roughly $11,000 per year for about 20 different medications.

Now, Medicare premiums are going up next year.

Crystal Curran with the Pitt County Council on Aging says the new "NC RX" program could help low-income seniors, like the Forlines, supplement prescription costs.

While the Forlines are thankful for any assistance they can get, Mary says she's not sure how much the $18.00 monthly supplement will help her.

Still, Forlines says she does plan to submit an application to "NC RX". How much it helps remains to be seen.

If you would like to apply for "NC RX", the deadline is December 31st, 2006.
