Two Die On Interstate 40

Two people were killed in a head-on collision in the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Durham.

A statement from the Durham Police Department says Glenda James of Kannapolis was heading east in the westbound lanes of I-40 when her car collided with a car driven by Stephen Schmits of Cary. The crash occurred at approximately 2:39 this morning.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The accident shut down all lanes of I-40 West between N.C. 55 and Fayetteville Road for more than five hours Tuesday. The highway reopened at 8:15 a.m.
