A retired university professor wanted in three states on child molestation charges is now in custody after his arrest in Panama. Richard W. Gibbs taught in Shippensburg University's journalism and communications department until he retired in the spring. When Gibbs fled, Pennsylvania authorities were trying to extradite him from North Carolina, where he was arrested in late June and freed on $25,000 bail. A Carteret County judge issued an arrest warrant when Gibbs failed to appear at a July 31st extradition hearing. His bail was increased to a million dollars. Gibbs was apprehended without incident last Thursday at a bar in Panama, where a U.S. Marshal says he was working under a different name. He was deported to Miami. Gibbs faces child sex charges in Pennsylvania, Ohio and California.
