There aren't a lot of choices for the aspiring bagpiper who wants to keep piping in college. Only three U-S colleges offer bagpipe study programs. One of them is Saint Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg.
It was at Saint Andrews that the instrument is a treasured aspect
of Highland culture. Bill Caudill is the director of the school's
Scottish Heritage Center. He says people tend to forget that
bagpipers were rare in the state despite the Scottish heritage of
many North Carolinians. He credits the image of bagpipers at the
funeral of President Kennedy in part for the instrument's revival.
