Tougher Standards For End-Of-Grade Tests

Tougher standards approved this week for end-of-grade math tests in public schools will apply to exams taken earlier this year.

Education officials say the standards will result in a significant drop in the number of passing students.

The tests were given to students in third through eighth grades.
They are used to determine how well students are prepared to
advance to the next grade.

Some local teachers and education experts criticized the exams,
saying students scored lower on national exams and could pass the
state tests by guessing.

But the state Board of Education increased standards so students
will have to answer more questions correctly to be considered
proficient.
