The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a meeting between some Beaufort County commissioners and certain members of the Beaufort County School Board based on an anonymous letter. Commissioners and County Manager Paul Spruill contend the letter was politically motivated. Spruill said Thursday afternoon during a press conference, he and the commissioners were never contacted by the S.B.I. or the district attorney's office. The anonymous letter, which has not been made public was titled "Citizen Complaint: Beaufort County Public Corruption and Governmental Official Misconduct." The county is appealing a jury decision in July that ordered the county to give the school system an additional $766,000 in funds. The school board is not commenting.
