Suspect Arrested In 21 Year-Old Murder

Kinston Police say DNA helped them crack a 21 year-old murder case. Wednesday morning they arrested 44 year-old Johnny Ray Mewborne for the 1985 rape and murder of convenience store clerk Benita Murphy in February 1985. An autopsy revealed Murphy had been raped and stabbed repeatedly. DNA evidence re-submitted by investigators in 2005 linked Mewborne to the case. Mewborne was arrested at the Maury Correctional Institution where he is currently serving a life sentence as a habitual felon for robbing convenience stores.
