Pulmonologists, or lung doctors, estimate nearly half of everyone living in Eastern Carolina is affected by some form of pulmonary disease. Doctors say one of the reasons respiratory health here is so poor is the region's high percentage of smokers and the prevalence of crops that emit a significant amount of dust when farmed.
But are there are tests that can show you just how healthy your lungs are. Spirometry tests gauge lung performance by calculating the amount of air the lungs can hold and the rate air can be inhaled and exhaled.
An event Saturday morning, a Run for Respiration, is aimed at raising awareness in the community on the importance of healthy lungs. Local doctors say while the community may be aware of lung diseases, the level of importance people place on them is typically low.
