A Second Jailbreak at Washington County Jail In Less Than a Year

Washington County Sheriff Janice Spruill said an inmate at the Washington County jail used his feet to kick out a section of brick wall, then tied several bed sheets together in an attempt to escape. Sheriff Spruill said inmate Michael Norman fell from the jail on the third floor during the escape attempt and landed on an air conditioner unit on the ground. Norman is listed in fair condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The section of wall Norman kicked out is right next to where two inmates escaped from the jail in October 2005, also by tying bed sheets together. A resident that lives directly across from the jail says she called to alert the Washington County Sheriff's office when she heard loud noises coming from the jail Wednesday night. She claims it took 45 minutes for authorities to respond.
