Windsor, NC -- Three Bertie County teachers have been suspended without pay and a Bertie County school employee arrested in two separate incidents.

In the first case, police have arrested an employee at an alternative school in Windsor. Authorities tell us 42-year-old Johnnie Cale was taken into custody Thursday, charged with assault by strangulation and misdemeanor child abuse. He's since been released on bond.

Cale is accused of trying to choke 15-year-old Travaris Dail at Uplift Academy. WITN did speak to Dail's mother who says her son passed out for two minutes, was hospitalized, and has bruises on his neck.

According to police, Cale no longer works at Uplift Academy. So far, we have been unable to get in touch with Uplift officials.

According to Uplift Academy's website, the school provides academic and therapeutic services to give students the skills they need to integrate back into their community school. The program, a part of the Bertie County School System, deals with students who have had behavioral problems in the past. Authorities tell us they have had to handle and deal with unruly students at the school before who have assaulted the staff.

In the second case involving Bertie County Schools, WITN was contacted by a parent who said his son was on a Bertie Middle School field trip, and a fight happened on the bus headed back to school. The parent says his son was put off the bus at a convenience store.

WITN confirmed three teachers from Bertie County Middle School were suspended without pay after telling the 15 year-old to get off the bus.

It happened Thursday afternoon in Bertie County.

15 year old Jerry Spivey Junior says he was left off Highway 17 near the shell gas station for nearly an hour until finally a teacher came and picked him.

The three teachers were suspended without pay Friday morning.

The Superintendent of Bertie Schools says this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

The 15 year old's father says the family may seek legal action and wants an apology from the school.

We are also told that the student was suspended for three days.

There is NO excuse for leaving a child alone for any reason. At a minimum a call could have been made to police or CPS to get someone to watch the child. Teachers and their union have more excuses that politicians for not doing their jobs. NC ranks 24 out of 50 states in Education in USA. The USA ranks 18 out of 24 rich industrialized nations in education. In effect, a lot of teachers are being paid for poor performance. Under no circumstances do you ever leave a child alone anywhere, much less in a strange place with strangers.

Well, I was born and raised in Bertie Co. I enjoy the beautiful country but some of the people I could do without. If you have never been, lived or had to go to school in that horrible system then please do not comment. The kids have no respect for authority. They do not show respect to whomever is raising them what makes you think they are going to show respect and act the way they should for teachers. It all starts at home and unfortunately lots of the kids in Bertie County do not get the proper training at home as such they have no clue how to act in public. Some of the teachers in Bertie County I am not quite sure how they got their certifications. So you can see what a cluster it is. Bertie is one of the largest counties in the State yet they have only one High School. Past School Board Members have takeen trips, build houses etc with the Schools money. So it is not only the students, parents, and teachers but the so called leaders are just as bad.

I agree that the teachers should have not put the boy off the bus. He should have been isolated and restrained. The teachers must have been at their wits end. They cut our pay increase our class size and lower moral and still want more and more. A job is a job and I guess teachers will suck it up.
