The bridge connecting Washington and Washington Park in Beaufort county will close in June for the next 15 months.
The Department of Transportation awarded a 2.8-million dollar contract to replace the bridge over Runyon Creek on Highway 32 near Haven's Gardens.
The contract was awarded to Sanford Contractors Inc. of Sanford.
Work is scheduled to begin as early as June 1, with final completion no later than Dec. 31, 2010. Work cannot be scheduled prior to this date due to environmental moratorium that prevents work in water.
The bridge will be closed to traffic and a detour will be in place. Motorists traveling east on N.C. 32 will turn left on Hudnell Street (State Road 1352), right on U.S. 264 and right on Brick Kiln Road (S.R. 1303) back to N.C. 32. Westbound motorists will follow the reverse route around the construction site.

There is no need for Hwy 32 to go down River Road in the first place. It should not turn at 3rd street but continue to 5th street and turn right there and continue to Douglas Crossroads.

REF TO DETOUR DUE TO BRIDGE AT HAVENS GARDENS. I HOPE A TRAFFIC SIGNAL WILL BE INSTALLED AT BRICK KILN AND HWY 264 OR THERE WILL BE A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH TRAFFIC AND A LOT OF UPSET PEOPLE BEING LATE FOR WORK. NO ONE WANTS TO USE THE MIDDLE LANE ON 264 NOW AS IT IS. DON'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WHAT THE MIDDLE LANE IS USED FOR? I DON'T GO THAT WAY JUST FOR THE FACT THAT I HAVE HAD TO WAIT FOR UP TO 30 MINS. TO GET OUT WITH JUST A FEW CARS IN FRONT OF ME. WHAT IS IT GOING TO BE LIKE WHEN EVERYONE HAS TO GO THAT WAY? I FORESEE MAJOR "ROAD RAGE" AHEAD. ALREADY THERE ARE NUMEROUS ACCIDENTS ON A CONSTANT BASIS ON THE RIVER ROAD AND BRICK KILN INTERSECTION END. WITHOUT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL, BOTH ENDS WILL BE A WRECK ZONE! I HOPE THE NEEDED PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. THERE IS TIME TO TAKE CARE OF THIS BEFORE THE DETOUR BEGINS. I HOPE THE RIGHT PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THIS CONCERN. THANK YOU
