A lit cigarette thrown out a vehicle window may be to blame for a brush fire Monday.
The fire burned an estimated four to five acres between Belhaven and Leechville in Beaufort County.
Forestry Service Officials and 5 other area departments responded to the fire along Highway 264 East.
The N.C. Division of forest resources says just over 76 hundred acres have burned in wildfires in the state so far this year.

The problem is that unless an officer sees it, they cant do a thing about it. I asked a police officer if it would help turning in the tag numbers of people speeding thru my neighborhood and I was told they cant do a thing unless they see it. But who knows it might be different if you happen to report the person who throw out a cig that started a fire.

Betty, I'm all for writing down the tag numbers. I just wish it would do something or make a difference.
