Troubled bridges here in Eastern Carolina will finally be replaced.

The Department of Transportation says the two bridges over the Tar River on Grimesland Bridge Road will be replaced with a single high rise bridge.

The cost is $12.4 million and work could begin as early as the end of the month. The D.O.T. says the new bridge will be built along side the existing bridges, so traffic will not be affected.

The bridges have had multiple problems in the past couple of years. In December one of the bridges was condemned as its re-enforced concrete foundation began crumbling.

Building the new bridge should be completed by May 2012.

to sam; sure sam,, keep your head where it is,,,it's the same here as it was in 1809. my mistake,,there's been no change. "tell the state to reimburse someone for extra gas" sure sam,,,you're in touch with reality. let me know how that works out for you.

To voter: Eastern North Carolina has at least two centuries before it ever gets to looking like New York City. Be realistic. Hey Wise One, I would be asking or better yet telling the state to reimburse me for the extra gas that I'd have to use up to go around. I know it's got to be a pain for you if you work in Washington.

The company that is doing the Clarks Neck Bridge should get some lessons from the crew doing the Hwy 17 bridge in Washington. It will probably be across the river before the little CNR bride is completed.
