A Washington police officer is accused of targeting Hispanics during traffic stops and robbing them of money.
Steven Hilsinger was arrested Monday. Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation say they confirmed complaints against Hilsinger by setting up sting operations over several months. They say an undercover agent posing as an Hispanic operated a vehicle in the Washington area until Officer Hilsinger stopped him, and that on more than one occasion, Officer Hilsinger stopped the undercover agent and removed money from the agent's wallet.
Hilsinger is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate Tuesday and later appear in federal court in Raleigh where he will be charged on a criminal complaint. Investigators say more charges could be filed.
We'll have more details on this story on WITN-7 News starting at five Tuesday afternoon.
