A report by the Harvard School of Public Health says Watauga County residents have the longest average life span of 78.6 years. The bad news, you can find the lowest right here in Eastern Carolina. Martin County had the worst at 71.2. The report cites race and income as playing large roles in life expectancy. Hawaii leads the nation with an average life expectancy of 80, while North Carolina ranks 40th with an average life expectancy of 75.8
