Police went door to door in Herigate Park off of Minuteman Lane in Washington, Beaufort County, Friday morning, urging people to leave
their homes as the water rose because of rainfall from Tropical Storm
County Emergency Management Director George Sullivan says the
police were knocking on doors because most people were asleep and
unaware of the danger.
An evacuation order also was issued Thursday for Whichard's Beach that often suffers river flooding in heavy rain.
Sullivan says a total of about 1,500 families were told to evacuate.
