Officials at the Pitt County Chapter of the American Red Cross are watching Ernesto closely.
They say they are always ready for any disaster, be it something that happens quickly, like a house fire, or a hurricane, for which they can prepare for days.
The Pitt County Chapter has more than two dozen schools to use as shelters, which can house 150 people each.
