Shock and disbelief. That's how some folks in one community reacted after law enforcement officers went door to door and notified them they have a sex offender living in their neighborhood. Deputies with the Bertie County Sheriff's Office checked on nearly forty registered sex offenders in the area and found six of those in violation of current sex offender laws. Deputies also worked to notify people living close by that they have a sex offender living in their neighborhood. Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins said this is the first time a planned, organized effort to check on sex offenders has been carried out. Authorities arrested two of the sex offenders on unrelated warrants. Sheriff Atkins said a deputy will be assigned full time to keep tabs on sex offenders living in the county.
