District Attorney Mike Nifong's re-election bid has the backing of a group trying to counterbalance criticism of his handling of the Duke University lacrosse team rape case.
Nifong faces a write-in challenger on the November ballot as well as a recall effort. Citizens for Mike Nifong Committee is led by Kim Brummell, a corporate security officer and writer, and community activist Victoria Peterson.
Nifong says he had nothing to do with the formation of the group, which plans an organizational meeting on Thursday. Steve Monks, chairman of the local chapter of the Republican Party, is running as an unaffiliated write-in candidate against Nifong.
Nifong also faces opposition from a group of voters called the "Committee to Recall Nifong -- Vote Cheek." The group is urging people to vote for Lewis Cheek, a county commissioner who has said he would not serve even if elected.
