The first day that North Carolina port workers were required to have a new federal identification card went well and a spokeswoman says training and communications paid off.

The Transportation Worker Identification Credential became effective Monday at seaports from North Carolina to northern Florida, the Great Lakes and Long Island Sound.

North Carolina ports spokeswoman Karen Fox said things went well
at dock facilities in Wilmington and Morehead City.

A few people didn't have the card and weren't allowed in without
an escort or said they would get the card and return.

The Coast Guard is in charge of enforcing the regulation in a phased rollout scheduled to be complete by April 15.
