UPDATED: Wal-Mart Worker Dies After Shoppers Trample Him Save Email Print

Police say a Wal-Mart employee was knocked to the ground and later pronounced dead after opening the store to anxious shoppers on Long Island, New York.

A spokesman for Nassau County police says it was "utter chaos." One women said shoppers were acting like "savages." Other witnesses say even as the man lay on the ground, shoppers streamed into the store, stepping over him. Police say dozens of store employees who tried to help the man were also trampled by the crowd.

At least four other people were hurt, including a woman who is eight months pregnant. Police say she and her baby are said to be OK.

Surveillance video is being reviewed for possible criminal charges. But police say it could be hard to identify individual shoppers.

Below is a statement posted on Wal-Mart's website:

Walmart Statement on Black Friday Incident at Valley Stream Store

We expected a large crowd this morning and added additional internal security, additional third party security, additional store associates and we worked closely with the Nassau County Police. We also erected barricades. Despite all of our precautions, this unfortunate event occurred.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased. We are continuing to work closely with local law enforcement and we are reaching out to those involved."

- Hank Mullany, Senior Vice President and President, Northeast Division, Walmart U.S.

WalMart should be held responsible. THey were not prepared And their statement shows they knew there would be a problem. If they really were working closely with Nassau Police, why??? At that point they knew they had a problem, and only did what would cover themselves, not their employees.

Hey "McCain snake oil" your correct Jesus Christ birthday was in the summer and the exact date was Sept. 11, 3BC. So for all you saturnalists celebrators this the season to be greedy. And live it up at your office parties

No different than the "crap" that happened during the Katrina aftermath in NOLA

Posted by: morgan Location: :D on Dec 4, 2008 at 01:45 PM
man, it stinks that people can be so greedy to get into the store that this would happen... but i think everyone in this situation should be prayed for.... but especially the man's family!

to JACKSON; When I was in basic training we had to pull community services at different locations. This on time we were assigned to a grocery store where we helped restock isle and various other odd jobs. The manager led us to the end of one of the isle's where there was a display for cans of peas that read 2 for a $1. Then he lead us 3 isle's over to the vegetable isle where the same peas were marked at $.48. Just goes to show you what people will do when they see a 2 for or 1/2 off display.

I can't believe what I saw at my WM: some people ran into the store on Black Friday to get to the $5 DVD bin. Those idiots didn't know those DVD were at regular price and bought at least 10 of those!

I'm not Greek so I don't recognize the use of X in place of Christ in the word Christmas. And, no He wasn't born in December, that's just the governmants date set aside for His birthday to be celebrated. Sunday isn't the sabbath either. I don't like using an X in place of Christ in the word Christmas but if you do, fine. I still feel it should not be done but opinions are like brains, everybody has 1.

I have a big family...and the grown ups don't exchange gifts...but we give to the children. I told both sides of my kid's family to give them money because I know what these fools obviously didn't. After Christmas you'll get almost everything you wanted dirt cheap on clearance. And Obama Snake Oil Co.... I would have never guessed you were black and live in Washington..WOW ...I wonder do I know you..

Posted by: Cat Location: Gboro on Dec 2, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Bigfruitbasket: I kind of thought what you said about "X" mas was pretty interesting. Had never heard that before.

Posted by: bigfruitbasket Location: NC on Dec 2, 2008 at 11:19 AM
I was respopnding to this post: Posted by: Q Location: Eastern NC on Dec 1, 2008 at 07:39 AM--actually Q brought up this notion about Christmas vs. Xmas. I was just responding to it. Still, it doesn't diminish the fact that a poor WalMart worker died as a result of negligence and mob mentality. Some innocent person dies as a result of a holiday sale? It's absurd.

Posted by: ojo on Dec 2, 2008 at 12:14 AM
i think they should just stop spelling it 'Christmas' altogether and call it what it really is, 'commercialmas'. or why dont we just cancel Christmas and make Black Friday the new holiday? or do away with holidays and just wait for the evening news to come on and tell you to spend all your money or the economy will wither and die? you know, cut out the middle Man.

Posted by: McCain Snake Oil Co. on Dec 1, 2008 at 09:34 PM
Also people need to stop letting their pastors think for them. I hate this man died because of the ignorant, selfish, impatient, greedy people. I also hate the fact people think some higher power is punished this man on behalf of the sinners who spell it X-mas.

Posted by: McCain Snake Oil Co. on Dec 1, 2008 at 09:30 PM
That is interesting BigFruitBasket. This death has NOTHING with spelling Christmas as Xmas. If "Christians" read and actually took time to understand the bible, then they would realize, Jesus wasn't born in December, he was born in the summer time. December 25 used to be a pagan holiday until it the "Christians" borrowed it just like the Bible borrows from other pagan religions. I think some people's preachers need to take some history classes and do some research. I thought this stuff was common knowledge by now. And from what I know about the Bible, I don't think Jesus would really care if somebody spelled Christmas as "X-mas." You would think he would be above all that, I guess he can't even live by the unrealistic standards set by the bible.

Posted by: Not shocked Location: Greenville on Dec 1, 2008 at 09:08 PM
I must admit that I am not shocked by this at all. I find it sickening to think that people act like this. If you need to fight for something to get it at a reduced rate then my hunch is that you really cannot afford it anyway. People asked me over and over if I was hitting those sales and I like a bargain and would rather pay less than more but I'll pay more than fight the crazy folks who lose all sense when they hit those sales. What happened to the meaning of Christmas? I know I'd love a nice gift as much as the next person but feel sick at the thought of someone fighting to get it for me. I want my kids to have the best items too and have the things on their list. However, if that means ordering a Wii from online or waiting a bit longer.... we'll wait it out rather than fight it out. God bless the young man's family. I'm sure Walmart will have to pay for more than the funeral arrangements! Sad indeed!!

Posted by: bigfruitbasket Location: NC on Dec 1, 2008 at 07:01 PM
Actually, this was bound to happen--sad to say it. As long as retailers offer crzy markdowns on products that people want, and offer them in short supply, this will happen again. I recall this trend starting in the early 80s with folks fighting over cheap computers and Cabbage Patch Dolls. Folks fought each other for the hottest items. I've said " no one will be happy until someone gets hurt or killed in one of these stupid sales." Well, it happened. Mob mentality and mob rule created this mess. Retailers feed this frenzy by offering limited supplies of "door buster" items for sale. It's like chumming the waters for sharks. Well, Wal-Mart got their "door buster." Was it worth it? I fear no one will be held accountable in this senseless death. The security cameras will not be able to distinguish one member of the customer herd from the other.

Posted by: here Location: here on Dec 1, 2008 at 01:29 PM
What ever happened to Merry Xmas, Peace, and good will to all. These people that did this need to step back and do alittle self reflection. What is the reason for the season? Walmart sales????? This country is a flaming ball going down FAST!!

Posted by: shopper Location: nc on Dec 1, 2008 at 01:11 PM
I was actually told that when you spell christmas xmas you are xing Christ out of Christmas. It may be a short way to spell Christmas, but I'd rather spell it the right way.I've asked several different pastors of different churches and they basically told me the same thing. It's the public retailers way to spell Christmas. I don't really know.

Posted by: A Location: NC on Dec 1, 2008 at 12:52 PM
This is exactly why I don't do Black Friday sales. It takes the meaning completely out of Christmas for people to be acting like fools to save $20 on a Christmas present that probably won't last a month. How much money did this store make after they had to close because someone was killed? Maybe Wal-Mart will realize that it's not worth it and find a safer way to help people save money next year.

Posted by: bigfruitbasket Location: NC on Dec 1, 2008 at 10:52 AM
The letter "X" in Xmas stands for the Greek letter Chi--which is also the letter which represents Christ. Xmas is the shortened version of Christmas. So, essentially Christmas and Xmas are the same thing. Most folks don't know this. They think Xmas is somehow demeaning to the meaning of Christmas--it isn't.

Actually Jr, the black race also got a black eye. After looking at the pictures, sorry to say it, it was my people.

Posted by: mom2 Location: nc on Dec 1, 2008 at 08:27 AM
I wonder if Walmart will pay for the expenses of the funeral, or make a settlement with the family? They should be held partially responsible. This case will be settled out of court, it's just how Wal mart is. I think people act the way they do because of the way Black Friday is advertised. My prayers are with the family.

Posted by: mom Location: nc on Dec 1, 2008 at 08:24 AM
I worked @ Walmart for 9 years. Believe me on black Friday things can get pretty hectic. In my years there I've seen people get knocked down but never killed. It's sad! I hope that everyone who had a part in this pays the price. Believe me there's NOTHING in a Walmart store worth killing someone over. This just goes to show you what this world is coming to. My prayers are with the family of the deceased.

black friday got a black eye.

Posted by: Q Location: Eastern NC on Dec 1, 2008 at 07:39 AM
It is all because they have taken Christ out of Christmas and just call it Xmas. Our Lord and Savior was not with these people stampeding into this store to get whatever it was for a present or deal. But I hope and pray for the soul of the departed and their family. Christmas isn't about getting the best presents, but it seems society's need for greed has pretty much pushed all of that aside. Stores start getting Christmas in around August, I know this cause I have worked for them. They start putting stuff out even before Halloween. What does this say about all of us overall? Blame... it goes on all of us. Just think, all of this prevented someone from spending quality time with their family, forever. Is a Baby Alive or whatever the deal is, really worth a real human being's life?

Posted by: Lucky Location: Greenville on Dec 1, 2008 at 07:07 AM
The website posted by Anonymous speaks volumes about the situation at this walmart. What was most interesting was someone posted a sign saying "blitz line starts here" on the outside wall. Blitz definded by webster "an intensive campaign or attack : a sudden overwhelming bombardment " now someone tell me this walmart couldnt anticipate what was about to happen when those doors opened. They just didnt realized someone would get killed. This was a TOTAL lack of common sense by the management at this walmart! Looking at these pictures one can realize why this walmart is responsible for setting the stage for this to happen, even if no one died, the injuries due to this type of "blitz" are all to real. This sign, infers that they were used to and promoted this type of rush, only this time someone died. There appears to be no oversight of this crowd, no crowd management and no plan in place to prevent or stop this. If they say they had a "few people" outside,IDIOTS!

Posted by: lucky Location: greenville on Dec 1, 2008 at 12:40 AM
To "ok": The fact they kept shopping and acting like animals after getting thru the doors, does indeed lend to the nature of people, and our society. Sadly though, that does not give relevence to the cause of death and to give the benefit of the doubt, I wouldn't think everyone who knew the tragedy happened would continue to shop. It wouldnt take but 10% of those people to cause this to become deadly, another 40% problaby upset bout linebreakers and pushed, the other 50% probalby wish they stayed home and had no control of being pushed thru. The stampeed could happen in any town, anywhere theres a crowd and conditions are right. Conditions were ripe for this to occur that day. Any business with substantial amount of people at one time,in conditions like this walmart, should consider and take steps to prevent this. It cannot be prevented without bold steps taken to guarentee it. Reinforced turnstiles and other control mechanisims to keep the crowd spaced out. No differnt than fire exits

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 30, 2008 at 10:17 PM
You wonder how in the world something like this could happen? How can human beings act like such savages? Take a look at the pictures, that answers it all. http://www.nydailynews.com/money/galleries/walmart_stampede_captured_in_pictures/walmart_stampede_captured_in_pictures.html

It's a shame humans have to act like wild animals. I never go out shoping on Black friday, I stay home and shop online. I love the deals you are able to find online (without all the wild animals).Dolls that sell in Walmart for $79.00 I bought online for $29.00 and a lot of other toys that were just as cheap. It takes time but if you have patients you can find lots of great deals. Merry Christmas to all!

Posted by: LD Location: NC on Nov 30, 2008 at 07:18 PM
I agree with Sherry, maybe they should do away with the Early shopping black Friday at Walmart. This is so bad and can you imagine him being on the floor under ALL those people and not being able to move that's so sad..

Posted by: One happy shopper Location: Washington on Nov 30, 2008 at 05:15 PM
Want to have a Merry Christmas? Stay home and shop online and have it brought to you. If you wish to shop elsewhere, buy from the little man and shop our local mom and pop stores. There's not enough $$ to make me shop at Walmart during the holidays!

Posted by: ok so on Nov 30, 2008 at 03:02 PM
ok lucky, good description of the stampede, that puts to light what was happening BUT why did those people just keep on shopping? if all that happened, and i saw or heard that folks were down (because of something i was a part of), i would see what i could do to help, not go look for a good deal on a tv and say 'oh well'!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 30, 2008 at 11:58 AM
to disgusted, no such thing as freedom of speech anymore and it will get worse!!!as for walmart, the only thing i buy there is underware and socks you pay cheap you get cheap, online shopping what i do ,no crowd no gas bill, s&h ,cheap compare to time and gas and crazy people ,

Posted by: Lucky Location: Greenville on Nov 30, 2008 at 11:46 AM
What a lot of people who is posting here does not understand. The situation at this walmart was that of a stampeed. Heres what it would look like from the viewpoint of someone in line. The doors going into this walmart is a set of double doors, lets make a guess each door is 36" wide, for a total of 6ft. They had 2000 people going thru a SIX FOOT OPENING, being SHOVED thru that door, you cannot see anything, you cannot see your feet. you only have one choice, being shoved farward hoping once thru the door, the area opens up and you can breath again. There is no turning around or stopping for hundreds of these people. This man once on the ground, had no chance, hundreds of these people had NO choice, they couldn't see him and couldnt stop. The line outside became one blob of people. Imagine 2000 people pushing against that door all at once, the first 500 had to have massive pressure. ANYONE who lost their footing early in that line was in severe trouble. Rescueisimpossible, saleillrelvent.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE DID NOT KNOW THEY WERE RUNNING OVER TOP THIS PERSON.. I MEAN WHAT KIND OF DEAL WERE THEY AFTER? NOTHING COULD BE THAT GOOD. I WENT SHOPPING ON BLACK FRIDAY AND IT WAS JUST UNREAL.. IF ANYTHING MAYBE THEY SHOULD DO AWAY WITH IT... PEOPLE JUST DON'T HAVE ANY SENSE ANYMORE... MAY GOD BE WITH THIS MAN'S FAMILY.... THIS IS SO SAD..

Posted by: walmart workers get first dibs on Nov 30, 2008 at 10:15 AM
i think people probably trampled because they were suckered into walmart 'blitzes' before just to find out that the employees already bought the merchandise. this happened to me before, to think i got up at five am for nothing! though it does NOT justify trampling and killing a person, i just wanted to bring that issue to light--walmart lets its employees get first dibs on these early morning sales!

Posted by: tj Location: nc on Nov 30, 2008 at 08:57 AM
This is a sad but perfect example of how pathetic our society has become. Most people are out for themselves and themselves only. GREED to save a few measley dollars on a tv. SHALLOW is another word. I know the economy is bad so they publicize everyday. But get real. This is truly unbelievable to me still. To have it blatantly say to your face that people are truly selfish and greedy. That is what this tells me. You know you may have suspected that most people in this world fit into this category but this just slaps you in the face and says its for real. You know that as time progresses it just gets worse and I am so very sorry for this family. Black Friday has another meaning now. Like a lamb sacrificed at the altar for a few miserable dollars. This is evil people just evil. All I can do is make sure that I don't become like them and PRAY for humanity!

Posted by: Cat Location: Gboro on Nov 30, 2008 at 07:31 AM
I am not a follower of the "Black Friday" crowd. If anything, I placed a couple of orders on-line on Black Friday.. I think it should seriously be done away with. This should have never happened.

Every single year these Black Fridays get worse and worse. Why continue to have them? Is it really worth losing lives so these idiots can get a VCR or Gameboy? It's the fault of these morons who participate in these things that are to blame for the injuries and killing of these innocent lives! I would rather save on my sleep and pay full price for something instead of being part of something that could ruin the lives of others. This world is FILLED to the max with ingorant morons and those are the ones who act stupid and do stupid things!!Those who get offended by what I said - ARE THE GUILTY ONES!!

Go to Walmart Corporate page on internet and they make a statement that they did everything in their power to prevent an incident at the store where the man was killed by hiring extra people, etc. Now how did they know ahead of time there was going to be an incident and hire extra people for that store only? Does not sound right to me. I know there was no one at the store door that I went to except the person that unlocked the door. No police, no extra employees, nothing. Walmart did acknowledge to the family their sympathy, but I felt the rest of the statement was an attempt to cover their behinds.

Posted by: Lucky Location: Greenville on Nov 29, 2008 at 11:19 AM
A stampeed can be caused by many different things, and a media enhanced sale with a race against the clock and other customers lined up behind a locked door can be just as deadly as a rush to get out of a burning building. Businesses are to blame for setting the stage for this. This death has nothing to do with "end of society", or greedy/selfish customers, many of these customers are unwilling participants caught in a survival situation being pushed in, a situation which once started is almost impossible to stop. One look at that crowd by an observant eye could have predicted this and called (plenty of)police to intervine before opening the door could have stopped this. As for the media bringing to attention negative things, thats exactly what news is, Front section of every newspaper is not the nice society/community pages. Now is the time for businesses to change things to make sure this never happens again.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 29, 2008 at 09:45 AM
I'm sorry, but I still found this hilarious. This shows you the beginning of the end of American society.

I worked at Walmart on two Black Fridays, or "Blitz" as they were called, and I am not suprised that this happened. I didn't "chuckle at the story", but I was not shocked. I remember people arriving the night before and sleeping in their cars attempting to be the first into the store. People are nuts.

Posted by: Blog Refuter Location: NC on Nov 29, 2008 at 09:41 AM
I agree with "Q". Society really does feed into this greedy and selfish spirit.

Posted by: huckfan on Nov 29, 2008 at 08:41 AM
agreed, crazy. so sorry for the loss of life and for the man's family.my prayers are with them. but once again millions of people went out shopping without incident and the media brings to our attention the one or two incidents that are negative just like they do on every other subject.

Posted by: Jessica Location: Chocowinity on Nov 29, 2008 at 08:17 AM
This is horrible. As a person who enjoys shopping on Black Friday - this doesn't shock me. I'm a person who if I'm standing infront of an item someone else wants will pass it on to them before getting my own. People who push and shove need to get at life! The deals are not worth killing someone over. Yesterday was I hit my a cart and pushed, but I laughed it off and went on my way. Why? People those people are crazy!!! This family is in my thoughts and prayers!

Posted by: To Anonymous @ 11:29 Location: Greenville on Nov 29, 2008 at 07:39 AM
There is no humor whatsoever in this story, and the fact that you "had to chuckle on this one" is just as sick and disturbing as this story. People are so rude and cruel to have to rush in a store and topple over others just to get something that was probably made in China and deadly or that will eventually go on sale at a later time. God help us!

Posted by: not funny on Nov 29, 2008 at 07:21 AM
i am so sorry for this persons family. what a terrible way to die, working at walmart. getting run over by greedy shoppers. what kind of christmas are the guilty going to have? how can they watch those big screen tv's they got on sale without thinking of that poor man?

Posted by: Kathy Location: Washington on Nov 29, 2008 at 07:17 AM
I blame the individual Wal-Mart for making people stay outside. This is the first time I have participated in Black Friday. The Wal-Mart in Washington didn't make people stand outside. You could go in and just stand there by the item you wanted. The store was jammed packed. I saw no mob mentality at all. It was a little hard to maneuver in the store but everybody was very respectful, saying excuse me, how are you, Merry Christmas. Kudos to the Washington Wal-Mart for creating an atmosphere where you didn't feel like you were in the middle of a riot. I got everything I wanted and it was a pleasant experience.

Posted by: Devil Dog Location: New Bern on Nov 29, 2008 at 05:19 AM
It's alot easier to order items on line from authentic websites. No hassle,no crowds,no tax,and no shipping costs. People who stand in line at 4am needs psychiatric help.

First of all to anonymous, I can't understand how you can "chuckle" at anything about this story. It's so sad. I can't believe people are sooooo stupid. It really makes me sick. I have never been to a Black Friday sale, and never will.

Posted by: BBQ Lover Location: Greenville on Nov 29, 2008 at 01:52 AM
I did exactly what ALPHA Female did; was asleep in my bed at those hours, and warm too! I never get out and shop on Black Friday; just ridiculous, someone died!

The reason this has happened, is solely placed on the businesses, they created this stampeed mentality by setting the stage for this to happen. The lines outside waiting, the clock ticking down for the "awesome savings" they drilled into the public thru the media. Human mentality is of survival first. And in a stampeed, for whatever reason, even the calmest people become survivalist and unwillingly participate, many of these people wouldn't be like this. The stage was set for this to happen, the miracle is that more haven't been killed. Untold injuries over the years because of this just doesn't make news until someone dies. You read about this in other countries, and think, "not in America". Wake up, this type of race to get a bargain, with 1000's of people lined up for hours, its no different than throwing a bone in a pen full of hungry dogs and expecting them to behave, its nature. Businesses are either too nieve or too greedy/careless, to believe people can't get killed.

America needs a reality check. Since when did material things matter more than a life. We need prayer. My thoughts are with this family. This man was just working his job.

Three of us got to Walmart in Ahoskie this morning at 2:45, with 2 people ahead of us. Line was orderly till 4:50 AM when about 50 people rushed up and crowded front door. Manager came out and I noted that these people were breaking line. Was ignored and doors unlocked. There was a stampede and my friend and I were knocked over our carts. My arm was hung and I came close to hitting the floor as cart was pushed over. I really panicked because I thought I was going to be trampled to death. Right knee was cut through jeans by another cart. Thank god for the family with 2 kids that helped us get upright and in the store before we were killed. Have shopped at many Walmarts for years and have NEVER had this experience. These people were vicious with no regard for others. Walmart should stop the sales, have adequate police or give out entrance numbers based on when you get in line. Walmart is going to have to devise a plan to keep shoppers safe if they want my business again.

This is just awful. I send my thoughts and prayers to this man's family. The fault lies with the store AND the patrons. The honest people don't rush the doors, it's the one's who drive up 5 min before the doors open, then stand across the driveway waiting to jump all the rest. Not saying that there aren't some people who did wait that are over-anxious but I know that that is what happens in my Wal-mart. Some years back, they actually had hit on a great idea. They had all of the sale items already on the floor on pallets, wrapped in brown paper, so you couldn't see what was inside. People were allowed inside the store, but you couldn't purchase anything until the sale officially began. This was a WONDERFUL ideal!!! No chaos, just people calmly shopping. Maybe WM will finally make some really necessary changes to their black Friday policy. I certainly hope this one hits them where it hurts....the pocketbook. Everyone should vocalize their displeasure to WM!!!

Review the videos, identify as many individuals as possible that trampled him, and charge them with manslaughter.

Posted by: wendy Location: goldsboro on Nov 28, 2008 at 07:24 PM
So much greed.Do away with black Friday. Some people can be so stupid. My heart goes out to this worker.

Posted by: joe Location: eastern on Nov 28, 2008 at 06:59 PM
The people who rushed to these sales are just stupid!!! Stuff is just stuff. It will never make you happy in the long run.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 28, 2008 at 06:48 PM
the stores should not offer this kind of sales reg hrs and reg price ,buy it or leave it if walmart did not open early the man would still be alive ,walmart is at fault ,intinceing the people to save a dollar!!

Posted by: WOW Location: ENC on Nov 28, 2008 at 06:32 PM
This dosent surprise me a bit - Just shows how shallow the human race has finally become over material posessions!

Posted by: MADDOG Location: GREENVILLE on Nov 28, 2008 at 06:18 PM
ALL this to save a $.Is that what we have come to? Don't worry about anyone else,,just knock them down and walk on them until they are dead,,after all I will save a $. Think about it people.DO AWAY WITH BLACK FRIDAY.

Posted by: Ashley Location: Washington on Nov 28, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Its not just walmart..i work at a department store in Washington and we had to be at work at 4am didnt open til 5 and there was a line of people waiting to get inside..and rushed in when we did open the doors!!

Posted by: Sarah Location: Fayetteville, NC on Nov 28, 2008 at 05:56 PM
Maybe if they let the black friday sales last longer then just 6 hours, the crowds will not be so bad.

Posted by: ~ALPHA female~ Location: O84P on Nov 28, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Someone finally lost a life over some junk...and they were just doing their job...how sad! What was I doing this morning? ....Same thing I do every black Friday....asleep...warm in my bed, with my rottweiler beside my bed snoring.

Posted by: citizen Location: greenville on Nov 28, 2008 at 05:12 PM
these people who killed this man should be charged with murder! pure and simple murder! the motive -selfishness and greed! i wish they could get those people for murder! they would deserve it!

This yearly mad rush to get bargains is disgusting. There are hungry people and homeless in this country and in the world - help them, rather than wasting money on gifts.

Posted by: VBush Location: MHCY on Nov 28, 2008 at 03:45 PM
GREED, pure and simple. A disgusting display of human indecency over mere THINGS. How sad a human does one have to be to want a 'good deal' on something so badly that they are willing to be rude and insolent to other people just to get it. That being decent is superceded by the 'want' of something? There are people in this world who don't even have clean water to drink and we have people here fighting over some insignificant electronic device or toy that will be collecting dust in some corner under a pile of other equally important junk within 30 days of it's purchase. What a disgustingly sad situation. I do not wonder why our country is in the shape it is in. We are imploding and our days as a proud, strong and decent nation are going away with the setting of the sun. GREED.......what a wasted emotion.

This is a shame!! Shame on those no good shoppers for being such greedy mean people! Shame on them all. This is why I use the internet to shop on holidays. I can't stand peoples additudes and greedy ways! If there is not a lesson learned in then its sad. Jesus is the reason for the season! not whats hot and for sale!!!

Posted by: unk on Nov 28, 2008 at 03:13 PM
Yes, you are right. It's not all the merchants fault. But there has to be a starting place and it starts with GREED. Greed of the merchants and greed of the consumer. Sounds to me that people keep forgetting the "Reason for the Season." Jesus!!! Don't seek the Baby Alives, but the Baby born in a manger. And for those who don't believe, this is a season of giving and sharing and in these difficult times we need to do all we can to help others. My thoughts will be with this poor man's family. My actions will be to share what I can, with those who have not. May God bless all and Merry Christmas.

This is crazy! What happened to common courtesy and respect. Plus it's walmart. Nearly everything is from China and these idiots killed someone making China's economy better. Great job fellow shoppers! way to extend common courtesy and respect to our fellow beings! Merchants don't create this frenzy. If you shopped throughout the year and researched what you were buying you would know other stores offer discounts throughout the year. Plus what's saving $10. Apparently a life to the idiots who started this stampede. On a brighter note I did go shopping at walmart this morning. First time ever on Black Friday and about my 10th time at walmart this year and I sneezed twice and two people said God Bless You! It is sad that them saying that is such a memorable event but so many people walk around with the worst attitude and dont take the time to think of anyone other than themselves.

Posted by: Sarah Location: Fayetteville, NC on Nov 28, 2008 at 02:35 PM
1st off, I don't blame the stores, I blame the crazy acting selfish adults. I think people get too dang crazy. I went for the 1st time shopping today and This morning people were acting like lunatics at the walmart I went to here in fayetteville. I think the stores should let a certain number of people in at a time and let cops hold the rest and make them stand in line. This is what happens at the college bookstore here. Its crazy. I saw a woman fussing and hollering b/c she could not get to the Baby Alives, she told me to let her thru, I said where the heck am I gonna move to. Climb the wall like Spiderman.

Posted by: Mary Location: North Carolina on Nov 28, 2008 at 02:24 PM
Obviously people have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. My prayers go out to this young man's family.

Today's society is to blame. Merchants do create this problem and we in society buy right into like sheep to the slaughter. Lead us almighty dollar. Everything is accepted this day and time, so look for stuff like this to continue to happen and look for it to get worse in the future.

Posted by: Me on Nov 28, 2008 at 01:25 PM
What's the matter with you people blaming Wal-Mart and other companies? They didn't trample the employee, the idiot customers did. It is not a retailers fault when this happens. This is about personal responsibility!

Posted by: unk on Nov 28, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Tragic. Why do merchants create this frenzy? Why don't they just lower prices, they are still going to make a profit. I bought a $40.00 winter coat for $9.99, Did the merchant make a profit? Or did he just out of the kindness of his heart lose money to someone he didn't know? Oh, I bought the coat last Feb., winter clearance, no frenzy, no line, no waiting.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 28, 2008 at 12:24 PM
this just goes to show how much respect people have for each other what was so important that a person lost their life over

Posted by: Thomas Location: Benson, NC on Nov 28, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Absolutely sickening. It numbs the mind to think about the absolute greed and selfishness that large businesses develop in their customers.

Posted by: Blog Refuter Location: NC on Nov 28, 2008 at 11:54 AM
That's a darn shame.

Posted by: Jen Location: Choco on Nov 28, 2008 at 11:46 AM
This is absolutely awful! My thoughts and prayers go out to this individual's family. This is exactly why I don't shop on black Friday. Is it worth killing someone to save a few dollars on the TWO items in stock that were advertised at lower prices? The stores always have only a few of the items advertised, so I blame them as well.

Posted by: Rob Location: NC on Nov 28, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Good ol' American greed and consumption. Ho ho ho.

Posted by: Brenad Location: Greenville on Nov 28, 2008 at 11:40 AM

this is crazy an innocent man is dead because of people acting stupid!!!

Posted by: John on Nov 28, 2008 at 11:34 AM
It saddens me that people get this excited and stupid over some cheaper then usually cheap crap. They TRAMPLED someone to death! Each and every one of them should be charged. What's even worse is this type of thing is becoming expected on Black Friday.
