Trial of Former C.I.A. Contractor Underway in Raleigh

Jury selection is underway in the David Passaro trial in U.S. District Court in Raleigh. The former C.I.A. contractor is accused of beating a detainee so severely that the man later died. The defense and prosecution had been fighting over the defense effort to call C.I.A. personnel to testify. Among those targeted for subpoenas was former C.I.A. Director George Tenet. The judge in the case agreed with prosecutors to keep several C.I.A. employees, including Tenet, from testifying. Passaro is the first, and so far, the only civilian charged with mistreating a detainee in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
