Hunter Targets Deer, Hits Kids Save Email Print

A hunter aiming for a deer in Michigan hit a home daycare center instead, grazing two young boys.

"We heard a loud shot, like an aeresol can was exploding or a lightbulb exploded," said Angela Jarvis, who owns the daycare in Cheboygan County.

They they found two boys, Connor and David, suffering from wounds to the chest and leg.

Police say the hunter was 400 yards away from the house, which is legal. But police say the hunter is also responsible for knowing what is around him or her.

Police say the hunter does live in the area and knew there was a house there. Once the investigation is complete, it's up to the prosecutor to determine if there will be any charges against her.

David and Connor were treated and released at the hospital.

You people kill me with all your dog running crap. We have people walking into stores in broad daylight gunning people down like it is nothing and you are worried about a dog running across your land, well they are not going to set up camp. What are they your deer? You have names for them? You need to worry about going to a store anf being gunned down not who's dog may cross the road. As for the hunter in the story I hope he has learned a vaulable lesson and thank God no one was seriously hurt.

It was posted if you have never hunted with dogs then you can't say anything. Well I have hunted with dogs and I liked it. I was probably running dogs when most of you weren’t even thoughts in mommy and daddies heads. That was many years ago when people had respect. Yes you never use to see posted signs but you will know. Over the years in hunting just as society the youth that are growing up have no respect. They learn that from the parents. There are very few dog hunters that have any respect any more. This will all change someone brought up that dog hunting kills more deer, I guess we will see. NC wildlife has thrown a curve ball this year when a kill is registered they ask how the animal was taken by dogs or other. They will be using this information to determine if dog running is actually a help in reducing NC deer’s population. Also in dog running it is hard to have correct Quality Deer Management and NC needs this bad.

You marine officers, along with your fellow spit and polish disciples, do not impress me with your arrogance and self-righteousness.

To Anonymous at Nov,28 2008 at 11:27PM Oil Corporations hire killers? I own Exxon - Mobil Stock. I cannot find in any financial statment they hire killers it is against Corporate policy. They do hire Oil Drillers, and I think they sell gas. Sounds like you also need a American History Lesson Marine Officers do not go to Boot Camp. Lets stick with the facts and stop the spin.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 28, 2008 at 11:27 PM
Well, Maj Lynch, sounds like you need a lesson in history as well as a English 101. But, they don't teach you that in boot camp to become a hired killer for the oil corporations, do they? Rob has an excellent idea.

Posted by: Local 584 Location: Lynbrook N.Y. on Nov 27, 2008 at 01:37 PM
Mark, If you don't like out of towners owning the land & posting it! You might thing about buying some land youself. And yes we do pay taxes on the land.

Posted by: Maj. Lynch Location: US Marines on Nov 27, 2008 at 12:56 PM
Rob - if you are so against guns why do you know so much about the NRA? What you wrote is not true the NRA is against any Govt. secret army. What Month and Page Number did you read this NRA Magazine at tell me please. A regulated what? We already have the National Guard. You do not need a regulated anything you have the US Marines, and we kill thats what we get paid for. Jasper is right criminals do not about your regulations.

Posted by: Tim Location: Havelock on Nov 27, 2008 at 07:07 AM
And then there was the time that a city slicker came out to Chatham County, complete with bonfire and empty bottles, and turned in a mule to the wildlife station. True story. During deer season, you lock up your dogs, kids, cows, etc.

Posted by: Rob Location: NC on Nov 26, 2008 at 10:32 PM
Jasper, as I stated in an earlier discussion on this very subject, I would not allow myself to get into that situation. Simple solution- Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Regulate the guns to ONLY "...a well regulated militia" as stated in the Holy Script of the NRA fanatics.

As a female hunter,I agree with Tyrrell County Hunter that we should all stick together in order to protect our hunting rights...however,I must say that anyone who owns property that they want to protect detests having dogs running all over it...and I believe that most people would feel the same way if it were their property....Dog hunting is fine,as long as the dogs stay on valid hunting property with the express permission of the owner;otherwise it is the same thing as trespassing....Sorry about these victims, and I'm sure this hunter has learned a valuable safety lesson.

Posted by: Jasper Location: NC on Nov 26, 2008 at 06:24 PM
Hi Rob - Criminals do not care about any Amendement to anything. They can always get guns, and very good ones too. Mind changer 3 guys with guns ripped out your house phone lines outside, and just broke into your house. They are coming up the staires. You and your wife are in bed your 2 babies are sleeping. You see them your wife runs into the bedroom bathroom. They are at the bedroom door demanding your famillies life or money. I bet you wish you had a shot gun and they did not Repeal the Second Amendment now!

Posted by: Sam Location: Williamston on Nov 26, 2008 at 03:38 PM
Here is the perfect solution, how about do as much seperation of the houses as possible from the open land for stilll hunting, and seperate both of those from open land for running dogs, this will solve the problem and everybody will be happy.

Posted by: Rob Location: NC on Nov 26, 2008 at 02:57 PM
Here's an idea that make all the pro-military and gun nuts foam at the mouth- Simply repeal the Second Amendment.

Posted by: tb Location: Dog country on Nov 26, 2008 at 02:16 PM
I feel sorry for the kids and families also. Some of you "Still Hunters" need to understand that just because you have rights to hunt a small portion of a large track of land that you DON'T own it all, if you dont want my dogs on it put a fence up! Thats the only problem my club has with Still Hunters we have 12,000 acres and the still hunting club has 100 and thinks they own all 12,000

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 26, 2008 at 11:40 AM
Boy, that deer ham I ate last night for dinner was surely something good. Couldnt go to the walmart super center and buy one of those!! Some need to realize that hunting is not just a sport to some, but a means of putting food on the table!

Posted by: Sgt.Cash Location: US Army on Nov 26, 2008 at 10:28 AM
First to the Anti - Gunners. A Gun has never gone to Jail or Prison for commiting a crime. A 400 yard shot at a even without a scope is not a real hard shot to hit a deer with todays rifles if you have good eye sight. At 400 hundred yards the deer might look 1/2 its real size. The house behind the deer is very clearly visable " It is a House " Bulletts go basicly in a straight line, and up or down. Wind drift, weather conditions and gravity can and will effect a bullets flight. You just can not shoot a rifle and miss a target, and not know behind your target if your bullet can fly for over a mile or more. You can hit something else like a person in town or a house. She needs to learn more about her sport, and sport safty.

Posted by: SLP Location: Greenville on Nov 26, 2008 at 09:59 AM
I agree that all hunters need to stick together, but I don't agree with dog hunting. It is so aggrivating to do all the work setting up your tree stands and putting corn out just to have dogs run all through your land messing up your hunt. Unless there is a way to keep dogs on their own property, which we all know there is not, it should be outlawed!!

Posted by: Tyrrell County is Right on Nov 26, 2008 at 09:05 AM
I agree with you Tyrrell County. For people who hunt differently to be slamming each other is counterproductive. Hunting is a sport in some ways, but it is also a human instinct. We are predators and it's as natural to hunt as it is to grow a garden. But, hunters have a responsibility to practice safe hunting techniques and the primary one, in my book, is to make sure your shot is safe before you make it. My daddy taught me, in no uncertain terms, all the hunter safety rules when I got my first BB gun and they've stuck with me to this day. Still hunting, dog hunting, bow, either traditional or compound, it doesn't make any difference, it's still hunting and we've all got to stick together or our children and grandchildren will never get the opportunity to hunt. Stop putting each other down.

Posted by: How sad... Location: NC on Nov 26, 2008 at 07:19 AM
You know, I have nothing against hunting either way you choose to do it. It's all about personal choice and it's your decision how you go about doing it. It is true that deer need to be thinned out to prevent overpopulation, or else alot more people could be injured from them running out in front of vehicles. However, I think it's really sad that this became a topic about who hunts the right or wrong way. The concern here should be for the children that were injured by the actions of this hunter. Granted it appears these children will be okay, but have compassion for the injured instead of bashing each other for your personal choices. Live and let live! Thank God these children are okay!

Tyrell County Hunter has made a very good point. We gun owners had better stand together, or the liberal Democrats are going to try to make a shambles of our constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and take away our guns. Cactus, I was being facetious and sarcastic with you in my last post, and for that I apologize.

Posted by: Cactus Location: Strabane on Nov 25, 2008 at 08:57 PM
You are welcom Ron, have a nice day.

Posted by: Tyrrell County Hunter Location: Middle of Nowhere on Nov 25, 2008 at 08:31 PM
You boys ought to be ashamed of yourselves for criticizing other hunters who employ legal methods that you don't personally prefer. No true gentleman sportsman derides another whose tactics vary. Y'all better wise up, because hound hunters, "still" hunters, treestand hunters, bait hunters and all other sorts of hunters all face a common enemy: the ANTIHUNTER ... who makes NO DISTINCTION between us. And almost every ANTIHUNTER is an ANTIGUNNER. If you boys want to continue your "grandfather's traditions" (or any other hunting tradition), you'd d@%$ well better learn to stick together and support one another before it's to late. All of this cutting one another down and deriding of each other's sporting preferences will be our undoing. So ... swallow your foolish pride, learn to live and let live, and if you hunt, SUPPORT OTHER HUNTERS whatever their preferred method of doing it. There's room enough for us all. One thing's certain: We'll stand together or fall together. Better wise up!

Posted by: Ron Location: Merritt on Nov 25, 2008 at 08:30 PM
Gee, Cactus, I'm sure glad you set me straight on so many things. I don't know how I managed to have lived as long as I have being so mis-informed about so many realities of life.

Posted by: Cactus Location: Strabane on Nov 25, 2008 at 07:23 PM
Know your target and what is beyond. Ron I would almost bet you have a dog that is overweight, and you eat processed meat (talk about cruelty to animals). Ron these are sporting dogs not couch pups. Mark, you are right. Weather you hunt or not but love wildlife buy a hunting permit, duck stamp, fishing permit and support water rights and restrictions. These permit funds are used to support wildlife reserves, stocking (years ago NC had very few deer, but sportsman changed all that). Ron, deer like any other NC resource has to be controled so we have a hunting season. Would you put 15 cows on an acre of grass, you will have to take 14 out so that one may surive. Ron have you ever hunted? Ron this is not directed at you, lots of people feel as you. Ron I used to hunt (quit because of age) but I will report an illegel hunter in 1/2 second with no remorse. Yes Ron there are hunters and then there are pochers.

Posted by: Ron Location: Merritt on Nov 25, 2008 at 05:48 PM
I'll be glad when deer season is over in NC. Those "Great White Hunters" sitting in their trucks along every road in populated areas scare me. It's a wonder people and houses aren't shot around here. As far as hunting deer with dogs, it looks like cruelty to animals to me. Most of the dogs I see along the roads look frightened and emaciated. Sportsmen, indeed!!!

Posted by: Trisha Location: Ayden, NC on Nov 25, 2008 at 11:50 AM
There was no mention that this hunter was hunting with dogs. Please don't criticize hunting with dogs unless you really have knowledge of the sport. From some of these comments, it is very apparent that these people have no idea what that are talking about. I would love to see a 2 year old child hold a rifle, shoot a deer at two hundred yards, being pursued by a good pack of dogs. Now that would be something to really comment on.

Posted by: Red State Location: Washington Co. on Nov 25, 2008 at 10:43 AM
Exactly right Mark. Dog hunting is much more challenging than still hunting. Everytiime I've ever been still hunting, the deer just stands still (hence the name) for you or at the most it bounces across a field. Even the bouncing ones are hard to hit, but imagine when they're stretched out and running from some very excited hounds. Wooooooh Doggy! Now that's a challenge. And you're right, most of the time, the deer wins. When you hit one with your car, both the deer and the driver lose. As for the article, I'm glad the children are okay and the hunter should be held responsible.

Mark, You sir are the intelligent one of this crowd.. I dont like to climb a tree & wait for a deer to come to the bait I put out... so thats my opinion...T, Joseph,& Optimistic so you dont like dog hunting you probably never done it... b/c all of the comments all of you made that is obvious... so dont do it but until a later fight it is still legal & Iam looking forward to dropping the tailgate & hearing the race for thanksgiving & being thankful for a fine sport our ancestors taught us how to do....Standing still with a rifle no challenge.... on the run... dogs a chasin with s shotgun (shoot em on tha run now) Those boys downin the dogs probably just started hunting!! D

Posted by: matt on Nov 25, 2008 at 06:01 AM
well said, mark!!

Posted by: mark Location: woodland, n.c. on Nov 24, 2008 at 07:31 PM
T, Joseph, & Optimistic are misinforming everyone that is viewing. Dog hunting is a long celebrated form of hunting in N.C. Yes, sometimes we are forced to hunt roadways but that is because of the thousands of acres of huntin land that has been lost to out of towners flashing their money around. When I was a kid, a posted sign was a rare sight. Now these signs are everywhere and they are not from people who are paying county taxes are serving on volunteer fire dept's, etc. What these so called ethical still hunters don't tell you is that they shoot deer over hundred pound piles of corn. Hunting with dogs is much more challeging and more times than not the deer survives the chase. The truth is dog hunting is the only method that is helping to keep the deer population under control. Without this form of hunting there would be more crop damage and more vehicle accidents. This is not opinion, it is fact. If you don't like dog hunting then hunt in your own county & stay out of mine

Accidental or not, every hunter is ultimately responsible for where his bullet goes. He should be charged reckless endangerment at the very least.

It seems this guy went to Dick Cheney's Good ole boy hunting school! This moron should be put away. A properly trained and smart hunter knows never ever point a firearm in the direction of a person or a target that he is not sure of! Most of all houses or vehicles!

Delta...I stand corrected. Thank you for pointing out my errors.

Posted by: delta Location: greenville on Nov 23, 2008 at 07:22 PM
Mary, you stated that you hoped this hunter would lose (his) hunting rights in NC. Go back and read very carefully. First, the hunter was a (her) being the one that did the shooting. Look and read the last paragraph again. Second, it happened in michigan, not north carolina.

Posted by: ??? Location: NC on Nov 23, 2008 at 03:40 PM
Mary, read the story before you comment. It was in MICHIGAN.It doesnt say a thing about hunting in N.C.

Posted by: Optimistic Location: Bath,N.C. on Nov 23, 2008 at 09:39 AM
I agree with T and Joseph, But please do not refer to the people on the side of the road as hunters. As a hunter, I see these as selfish, lazy vermin that allow their greed to endanger the lives of everyone that use the roadways. I hunt and successfuly, but I also believe that nonhunters should be allowed the privilege of not particpating in the sport. These parisites have closed the minds of a lot of persons that could be huge supporters of sportsmen everywhere. When is the county or state going to do what is necessary to protect us.This incident happened in Michigan, it would be tragic if this were one of our kids waiting for the schoolbus or your wife on the way home from the store. Or maybe even you, out of work or dead because of someones greed. Woops it was just an accident, sorry old buddy. I agree with a wildlife officer I talked to sometime back;{There are very few true hunting accidents}.

Posted by: Mary Location: North Carolina on Nov 23, 2008 at 08:57 AM
Thank God these babies were not killed. I hope this hunter will loose his rights to hunt in NC for life.

Posted by: Joseph on Nov 22, 2008 at 11:10 PM
I have to agree with u t and I hunt and I do not hunt with dogs but it does take a good shot to hit a deer at 200 yards running with a rifel

Posted by: DK Location: Greenville on Nov 22, 2008 at 09:17 PM
The article didnt say anything about dogs. But anyway, shooting in a direction of a house was stupid. Guess there are morons in the woods too.

Posted by: T Location: Washington on Nov 22, 2008 at 02:21 PM
I hope this moron goes to prison. I am a avid hunter, but I have no respect for these so called deer hunters who sit along the roadside(with dogs), run the deer to death, and then take a shot that my two year old son could make. I realize we have a overpopulation of deer in this county, and this is not good for farmers, drivers, etc. Any moron can sit along the road and wait for his/her dogs to run the deer to death, but a TRUE hunter actually goes into the woods, and HUNTS. I hope they take this guy's guns from him, as it is obvious he does not deserve them.
