Non-Profit Group Rejects Donation Over Turban Save Email Print

A Halifax County man was turned away from a local mission when he refused to remove his turban while trying to make a donation.

The Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids reports that Gary Khera, who is a Sikh, went to the Union Mission this week to donate cash or food. Khera said he previously had mailed in his donations.

A director at the mission asked Khera to abide by a rule asking males to remove all headcoverings inside. He refused, and then asked to speak to the executive director, who he said refused to shake his hand and told him that if he didn't want to remove the turban, he could make his donation elsewhere.

The Rev. Ron Weeks said his actions had nothing to do with Khera's faith or his turban.

This is an outrage and a disgrace. This just shows ignorance and stupidity on behalf of the board of directors for the union mission to allow someone as apparently racist as Rev. Weeks to have him even there.Rev. Weeks refused to shake Gary's hand and also refused to shake the hand of the black reporter from another news channel. The reporter wasn't wearing a turbine! Some people are just ignorant of other religions and because of this other people now have to suffer.WAY TO GO Rev. Weeks, maybe he should invite all the needy over to his house for christmas dinner since he is refusing donations.Sounds like he is doing ok

Removing a turban is not quite the same as removing a hat....it needs to be unwound and then later rewound as it is placed back on the head....also a bit different procedure than removing ones shoes when entering a mosque....btw in my house EVERYONE removes their shoes as they enter...it is called manners....but I don't require religious headgear to be removed.

Makes you wonder where the money went that was donated already also!!!

It looks to me like Gary Khera expected special treatment. "A director at the mission asked Khera to abide by a rule asking males to remove all headcoverings inside." Sounds like all he had to do was follow the rules that all other males must abide by. But no... we as Christain Americans are expected to be accomodating and have other beleifs shoved down our throats so as not to offend anyone.

I don't see what the problem with a turban is, but if I refused to take off my shoes when walking into a mosque, what would be the reaction there? Even if I was going in to donate money, I would be denied entrance if I didn't take off my shoes and rightly so since it's their place of worship. Freedom of religion works both ways. Besides if the man's motivation was to truly donate money, and his motives were pure, then he should have just left it with the person at the door instead of calling the news media.

This Union Mission obviously doesn't want donations and certainly won't get mine. Even the RCMP allow Sihks to wear turbans on duty instead of the regulation uniform hat. What a way to promote Christianity....Rev. Ron Weeks needs to forfiet his title as Reverend.

If they turned his money away then it goes to show you they don't need the money and or they are up to no good. It also goes to show you these people do not have their hearts in the right place. This is a sad case of discrimination based on looks and it’s wrong.

Hey, if they dont want your money, send it my way. You can wear your turban and I will shake your hand. Tell the idiots running this "mission" to get lost.
