Sheriffs in seven North Carolina counties have identified more than 3,100 people in their jails processed for deportation proceedings this year.

The North Carolina Sheriffs Association provided legislators Tuesday with data from a program in which sheriffs work with federal immigration officials to determine if people arrested are in the country illegally.

The deputies run names and fingerprints through federal immigration records to determine legal status. More than 4,500 people had been interviewed through the so-called 287(g) program through Sept. 30.

State law also requires jail operators in other counties to check the status of people charged with felonies or driving while impaired. Access to records is more limited. The first batch of data will be available early next year.

Worried makes a valid point about the Arab benefits. However , we are talking two different things. This idiot government of ours comes up with these hare-brained programs and yet this country keeps putting in the culprits so that they can continue to do these stupid things. As for illegal immigration, it should not be allowed. I feel for the latinos who come here because they want a better life, but they must be made to do it LEGALLY. Meanwhile, Americans need to quit voting in these charlatans because they think that they will get something free, and vote for leaders who care about America as a whole. I will not hold my breath however, for that to happen.

If someone of any ethnic group is in the US legally, there is nothing to worry about. Otherwise, jail and deport. I am weary of local elderly receiving substandard or no healthcare benefits when illegals go in and out of our clinics and ERs with a free pass. It's called not paying. If it makes an illegal angry, good. Go back to your native country and milk it dry.

Worried citizen, what part of illegal did you not understand? I have no problem with hispanics coming to the US, I have problem with illegals that don't pay taxes, use our welfare systems and medical facilites and don't pay. Anyone that pays taxes are supporting the illegals no mater what country they come from. So, who really benefits from illegals, only buisness that used it as an excuse to make more money by paying employees less money.

I think if anyone is here in America illegal they should ALL be sent back to were they came from. We have enough problems to deal with, with our own right now. Put the illegal immigrates on a tractor & wagon and send them a flying out of this country. Simply as that.

I am tired of all of this "all Hispanic's are Mexicans and all Mexicans are illegal" stuff. I am an AMERICAN! I was born here, my family has been in eastern NC since the late 1700s and people treat me like I swan across the boarder yesterday. I dont like illegals as much as the next person, but people, please try not to be ignorant. Not all of "us" are illegal.

I just don't understand why you guy's worry so much about the latin people being in this country!! I just don't get how we provide stores to the arabs that are here and we don't tax there buisness for 5 years and give them all they want and there the people who we need to be worried about!!!!!!!!!! Not the hispanic race! You know this country is so backwards that it ant funny. These stores that the arabs have they have 1 owner for 5 years when the tax free time is over they put it in another family members name that way they still don't have to pay...you never noticed how they are always ran by different ones? Well this is why!!! Even if the illegal latin person works with a fake ss# they pay in taxes to this country and never get it back!!!!! So think about that. This country benifets off of the latin people alot so STOP CRYING about how they are over here illegal and get the ones that is here illegal, legal and let them start being a law biding citizen!!!!!
