The North Carolina NAACP wants North Carolina State University to expel four students accused of painting racist messages about President-elect Obama on campus.

School Chancellor James Oblinger held a closed-door meeting Wednesday with NAACP President Rev. William Barber to discuss the graffiti in the campus free expression tunnel.

Barber wants an official response within 48 hours. Oblinger says both sides have agreed to move forward.

Four students admitted spray-painting the messages, including one that used a racial slur and suggested shooting Obama in the head.

Officials have said the unidentified students won't face criminal charges because the writing wasn't a hate crime since it was written on a wall where free speech is encouraged.

i think that we should elect someone else for president

Posted by: OK Location: NC on Nov 23, 2008 at 07:54 PM
The NAACP is needed now more than ever. Have you read these posts? If you think these people go into their everyday lives and treat all people as equals you are wrong. Oppression because of race still exists. I think more people should get involved in the NAACP instead of complaining. If these people think it is all right to even suggest shooting our next president in the head we have a long way to go.

I think it is time for the NAACP to disjoin as a group. It is out dated and is now pointless. Now, Barack Obama will be out president. Why keep bringing more complaints. Together, Yes, We Can. That is all we need. Stop being negative. We need to be positive that the future will bring HOPE for our youth. The USA will be a better country when the young generation take over... no more hatered and racism. All parents...bring fairness and hope for your children.

These idiots need to be thrown into prison. I did'nt vote for Obama..but threatening the life of political candidates [or anyone else's life, for that matter] should NEVER be encouraged or tolerated. I also think that racism is wrong. The same God that made me made everyone else. Both good, and bad, people come in all colors. Having said all of that, I have NO use for the NAACP. These people are nothing more than professional trouble-makers. They're always ready to hang the "racism" label on anyone who disagrees with them. If a white policeman is forced to use deadly force against an armed, homicidal criminal who happens to be black, the policeman is instantly denounced by the NAACP as a racist. But if that same criminal [who happens to be black] instead kills the policeman [who happens to be white], they would'nt DREAM of calling HIM a racist. This is a blatant double-standard, but don't you DARE point it out..YOU'LL be called a racist.

What group stood up and voiced thier concern when the gentleman as a Halloween "prank" took a mannequin, dressed it as Sarah Palin, palced a noose around its neck and hung it from the roof of his home. Just as the walkway states....this was his freedon of speech and only a joke. Personally, I found no humor in the act. Yet no group stepped forward voicing any outrage. Why make everything such a drama..yes that is why we have Sharpton and Jackson. They are quite good at stirring hatred.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: here & there on Nov 14, 2008 at 11:54 AM
We all knew things like this were going to happen we YOU elected YOUR president. I agree with the person that said the NAACP is just the "colored" version of the KKK.I'm not for either one of these organizations but the government does everything they can to "pacify" the NAACP.I totally agree that it was HORRIBLE to write these things about Obama, but if they had been written about any other president they might have been "looked" into but not the big stink that this has been. We're only hearing so much of this b/c your new president is PART black. Things like this have been happening probably ever since there was a president.

Posted by: Jason Location: New Bern on Nov 14, 2008 at 10:31 AM
If NC State would just ignore the NACCP and proceed with there own policies what would happen? Boycott so! b/c the economy already sucks! March so! Just do what is right do entertain and it will go away like a virus. As long as people allow them to be viable they will! Move On, get a real job and forget it. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton's job is to stir up trouble. They were no where to be seen in this election b/c the dems told them to shut up!

I did not vote for Obama, but him being our new president I hope and pray that he can help get this country back on track. As far as the naacp is concerned, I think Mr. Obama is a step above them. All of you people know that making death threats to anyone is wrong. All Americans, black, white, red and yellow need to stop this race hate. How do you think we look to the other countries?

Posted by: Unbiased Location: Washington on Nov 14, 2008 at 02:42 AM
I was thinking that since the election of Obama has finally broken the racial barriers and healed our nation, the NAACP could disband itself now that their job is done. I mean, since a black is now in the nation's highest office, what more advancing of colored people can be done? Now I see that as long as whites continue to make racial slurs, the job of the NAACP will never be done. When we learn to stop the hate, they will not have a job anymore, the NAACP can be disbanded, and they can focus on something new. Obama gives hope that you can be whatever you want to be. You can no longer blame the white man for holding you down. If you are not successful, it's your own fault. You cannot blame anyone else anymore.

What part of "Free Expression Tunnel" and free speech don't you understand? Where was the NAACP when NC Central University was handing Crystal Mangum a college diploma last year? To refresh your memories, she is the NC Central student and part-time adult dancer who falsely accused Duke students of rape. No one mentioned kicking anybody out of school then (except those that were falsely accused). Where is the equality for all? You passivists need to get energized, get organized, and speak-up or you won't recognize this country in a few years.

where was your OUTRAGE when Sarah Palin was shown hanging by a noose and McCain shown coming out of a fireplace with flames around him near Halloween in Ca?? Oh, they were white and we can't cry "foul" !! Get a grip naacp! who cares about you any more? If the shoebfit, wear it! All your organization has done is stir trouble for years!!

to Anonymous on Nov 14, I sure do wish someone would start NAAWP. That's really what we need and I think that is what it's going to come to. The NAACP has pushed us to it. They are very racist as most black people are. They are much more racist than white people. I am sick of most of the blacks acting like we owe them something. I don't owe them anything and I will not move over for them or even care what they think. Get a life NAACP. By the way Anonymous, I will vote for you.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 13, 2008 at 07:50 PM
Someone needs to fund the NAAWP. I will be president

Posted by: Bob on Nov 13, 2008 at 07:31 PM
It is funny that minorities in this country can do or say almost anything that they want, but if a white man says something then it is racist. I think racism is wrong but I am amazed that so many people in this country do not see a need for a balance here.

There will be more of this to come when Czar Obama takes over. Strike out free speech. Change the name from United States to The Peoples Republic of Obama.

I am white and 60 years. I was in school when it was segregated and wen it integrated. A lot of things were wrong back then and we have come a long way. What amazes me is (I know there are radicals on both sides) the prejudicies shown by more blacks than whites. Our daughter dated a young black man. He was invited to eat with our family at a Greenville restaurant clebrating two family birthdays. However when his birthday came around his parents took him to the same restaurant and guess who was told they could not come? You got it! Our daughter. Now who is the racist? Same thing here. These people were wrong in their choice of words. But worse things have been said and written about whiteds and we do not have an oranization to stand up for us. It is ok to support the United Black College fund, but you had better not advertise support for a united White college fund. That is racist. For get color. Judge them by how they treat you. Do not let others tell you how to act. other

Posted by: reality check Location: Greenville on Nov 13, 2008 at 05:46 PM
The students who wrote the graffiti of course reflect badly on the university by acting in such an ignorant manner. I did not vote for Obama but nor will I behave like this. But just as a reality check, Duke University a few year back sanctioned the full page add by a nut case who touted that the holocaust never happened. It was more than offensive, it was blatantly factually wrong , and definitely did not do much to credit Duke in my eyes or those of many others. I had family who died in concentration camps . The students who acted so childishly should have their names released and own up to their stupid actions, that would be punishment enough.

Posted by: Fed Up Location: Greenville on Nov 13, 2008 at 05:37 PM
Why is it that if anything is said about Obama it is racist, but you can say anything about McCain and there are no actions taken. God help us because we will see more stupidity and accusations from the NAACP now that Obama is president. Our freedom of speech will no longer be a freedom. I have to agree with Tad on this one. I don't like Obama, not because of his race, but because he is ignorant to the needs of our country. It will get worse, with him as president. And no it's a racist remark.

Posted by: Sally Location: Washington on Nov 12, 2008 at 11:16 PM To Dave in Greenville, When you go write about the NAACP, I want to go with you. The NAACP are only out to make trouble. I don't really care what they think and not many people do. We laugh at them so much because they are always showing how stupid they are. As long as the NAACP keeps acting like they do, racism will stay strong. The NAACP just want people think they are in control but most people think they are a joke and they are. They really need to get a life and if they want to do anything good at all, they need to try to bring people together and stop trying to keep them apart. The are nothing but trouble. The NAACP is a big reason this country is divided. Keeping racial divisions going puts money in the coffers for the NAACP, as well as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and friends. It's all about MONEY, folks.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 13, 2008 at 04:14 PM
The NAACP can pursue expelling students that posted racist remarks AFTER I can have The NAAWP (National Assoc for the Advancement of White People) pursue expelling the black kids at school for calling me a cracker.... But THAT'S not racist....saying whitey, cracker, etc...... Hm, double standard, huh???

Posted by: Obama Snake Oil Co Location: Washington on Nov 13, 2008 at 02:45 PM
Obama will make a difference. Learn about your government. Both houses are democratic controlled. Now, if Pelosi and Reid and obama don't want to drill, well then it will mater. If Obama taxes us to Bill Clinton age, it will mater, about 3-4 thousand more, rebate of 1 thousand?, what an election ploy. Obama wants to raise minimum wage, well, in a bad economy this will drive the costs up again. Ever noticed when NC raised the minimum wage that prices on food and services went up. Your lunch used to cost 5 dollars and is now 6 dollars. Boy, that helped those making minimum wage and the poor. Minimum wage was for a start up job at McDonalds not a career. Ask them about their retirement program..and most think that we didn't vote for obama over race? Wrong, we voted against liberalism, higher taxes and more government. We lost, so now it is your fault "when" it happens. See ya in the gas lines and unemployment line, be nice.

June, maybe we should find someone who is mixed black, white, asian, middle-eastern, etc. Would you think that would make even more people happy with him. Your premise is a massive oversimplification, silly on it's face alone, but believe it or not, some of us don't like him for other reasons other than his color. For instance, how about the fact that he has a socialist agenda, supports abortion on demand, spent twenty years cozying up with a racist preacher and is a complete fraud who can blather on for hours and say absolutley nothing of consequence.

The NAACP needs to keep their nose out of this. These kids did a dumb thing, true. Let the school deal with it. I am sure their names are now known throughout campus and all African American students who support Obama will be making their lives miserable anyway. Why didn't they make them paint the tunnel? They were merely verbalizing the frustration felt by all who were not supporting Obama, they just didn't do it in the right way. Keep the trouble-making NAACP out of that school!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: mccain supporter Location: nc on Nov 13, 2008 at 01:32 PM
I think that letting NCSU decide what to do is the best policy. I mean, give the 4 kids some credit, they came forward, admitted they did it, apologized, said they knew it was wrong and they shouldn't have done it. They did not have to do any of that, at a school of approx. 28,000-30,000 students, they could have just kept their mouths shut. Then the NAACP wouldn't have been able to say anything, because no one would have been singled out.

Posted by: Sheri Location: Jamesville on Nov 13, 2008 at 01:16 PM
What gives the NAACP the right to pass sentence? I'm not condoning what these students did, but expelling is too extreme for this incident. I think some community service would be better or whatever NCSU administration decides.....not the NAACP!

Posted by: Geez on Nov 13, 2008 at 12:59 PM
This is all such a bunch of "BS." The NAACP has to get their two cents worth in somewhere!

Posted by: me Location: nc on Nov 13, 2008 at 11:46 AM

I went to school with Billy Barber, that's what he was called during school. I remember remarks made against whites while we were in school, I never heard him speak out during school. He needs to stop trying to be another Al Sharpton, or Jesse Jackson. Enough hate has been spread, when the NAACP picks something out to focus on that is all that is done. Spreading Hate.

Posted by: Obama Snake Oil Co Location: Washington on Nov 13, 2008 at 10:44 AM
I like the way that everybody posting here talks of unity, new sherriff and respect for the president when just two weeks ago you hated Bush, your elected president and all the names you called him. What goes around comes around. If the kids want to hate Obama it is their optinion and their expression. It is the gage to where they are in maturity. To throw them from a college that taught "hate Bush" mentality and "kill bush" type rhetoric, well, get used to it. This happens with many presidents and will continue in the future. The NAACP is part of the problem and not the solution. If you want equality, be equal, not hard to do really. I really think having a game on the internet to "kill Bush" from Townhall should speak for itself.

Posted by: June Location: Whiteville on Nov 13, 2008 at 10:44 AM
What is the big deal with a black President. He is half white and half black so I would think everyone would be happy with him.

Posted by: The Realest on Nov 13, 2008 at 09:56 AM
Looking back around the time of 9/11 ANY threats on Bush were taken seriously (beyond rational thought) and could get you arrested. Here you are defending threats against our president-elect with hate crime doubled on top of it. I'm certain that if the walls were splattered with pictorials and text about killing President Bush or McCain/Palin you all would be in an uproar about it! Hypocrisy.

It's not racism its just plain hate from both whites and blacks. Maybe we would be better off if we tried to promote our similarities rather than our differences. Its time for both black and white to stop holding each other to different standards and we all take responsibility for ourselves, AND quit blaming someone else. And oh btw, Obama is our newly ELECTED president, let us all respect our country by respecting our new leader. remember it is the United Stated of America-what are you doing for our country to make things better?

Posted by: Jane Location: NC on Nov 13, 2008 at 09:23 AM
Last year a child was expelled from school for calling another student the "n" word, but only after he had been called a cracker and honky. The other child was not repremanded at all. The excuse that was given by the principal and the supt. of the school was lame to say the least. Tell me, why is it ok for one group to call racist names and not the other? Not that it's ok for either one to do it, but give me a break here. Things are only going to get worse with our new president in office for the next 4 years. So white people, get used to it. Terrible times are only going to get worse.

People are threatened all the time at some point in their life. History is that freedom of speech was there for a reason. If you think that this is the first threat to a president in writing, well, you must be reading a recent history interpretation. If you built of freedom of speech tunnel, well? Did you not think that someone would probably express it? Did you type in kill bush in google? Well, oh, forgot, this is the "chosen one". Well, he is hurting the economy right now and not helping. Just look at what you lost in your 401K. Taxes are coming after the little incentive check he promised. By the way, the kids turned themselves in. I guess next time they will all lie about it like Obama did to get elected.

Rappers talk about killing whitey and cops all the time. Who is reprimanding them? NOBODY. If blacks can say what they want then so can I.

Posted by: Kathy Location: Washington on Nov 13, 2008 at 07:16 AM
Nobody is more racist than the NAACP. They are responsible for sewing the seeds of discontent in their community. I wish they were outlawed. I wonder do they get government grants? Anybody know? I sure hope that the chancellor at State doesn't buckle to this machiavellian organization. The NAACP acts no better than the KKK. The only difference is the NAACP don't cover their faces but present them full of pride at the trouble they cause. I hope WITN will print this. They are becoming more one-sided every day.

Let's be sure to expel any black student who makes a racial slur as well. Contrary to popular politically correct thought, white people can be offended as well and their rights are also in need of protection. I knew William Barber as a teenager, he spewed racist dogma constantly. He has, at least, become more strategic.

The Business People have no confidence in Obama Look this is a hard cold fact. Since Obama has been elected, the Dow has gone down 15 percent. thats a ton of $$$$$ money. I was at lunch today for business and 2 people had taken there money out of the stock market a few weeks before the election because they were scared of a Obama presidency. Since his election theres been no confidence in him what so ever. The best explanation i got was " if i put money into stocks, theres a very good chance i will lose it, if i dont lose it and make a few bucks then Obama is gonna tax your profits out of you anyway, theres just no upside" and remember folks stocks are CHEAP. The reason poeple are taking there money out is because they have no confidence in Obama. You people put him in office, because you wanted " CHANGE " change to what death to America? Maybe that was the real plan all a long? We were just blinded by the man?

Walls of Hooded Men with AK47's Saying " Death to the Catholic Church " With a picture of the Pope Hanging by his neck on another wall. These USA kids might have been stupid, white or black. Kids do dumb things I have, so have we all. I say we give them a 2nd chance? If you want to really see hate graffitti go to Belfast.

I didn't vote for Obama but I now have some high hopes for him. I am afraid that with so-called black leaders as Barber, Jackson and Sharpton, Obama will never have a serious effort to move along race relations. These leaders are about my age and we probably have progressed as are as our racist selfs will allow. We will keep Obama's plate full of racism. I hope and pray this will not be the way it plays out.

If there is any expellimg to be done, William "Beached Whale" Barber should be expelled from all the Buffets within a 75 mile radius. How many lunches did this man have to pack to hold him over while he was meeting with the NC State Chancellor? If it wasnt at least 3 , then I know the Chancellor was worried that he may become lunch. It would be like a small child in the water with a prehistoric Megamouth shark.

Hey, it's a freedom of speech tunnel. Maybe they went a little overboard, but the school is well capable of handling the situation on their own. If a black person had gone down their and wrote "let's shoot Bush in the head", do you think there would have been such a stink about it? Let the school handle it. I think NCSU will have a hard time getting their students to "express themselves" anymore... tunnel or no tunnel. What a shame.

Posted by: Dave Location: Greenville on Nov 12, 2008 at 07:35 PM
I'm going to go to the NCSU tunnel and write stuff about the NAACP in it.

Posted by: Rob Location: NC on Nov 12, 2008 at 07:15 PM
Naturally the NAACP, a racist organization in itself, would have to jump on the bandwagon. If the university doesn't do anything, get ready for Sharpton and Jackson to heading for NCSU. And if they don't expel the students ,Sharpton will go on one of his Imus induced "Needses to be fired" rants aimed at the school administration. What jerks. I guess free speech is on its way out with the election of The Choosen One.

NAACP needs to jump into a bottomless hole. Who cares what these students wrote? It is their first amendment right to say whatever they want esp in a tunnel dedicated to just that! The NAACP does more to divide than to unite. People see this, we aren't stupid.

o.s.o you are right on. i think if the students get in trouble it should be because they made a threat on the president elect publicly (which is omitted by free speech). not because they are racist. its unfortunate and embarrassing that idiots can abuse free speech with racism, but its not against the law to speak in a racist manner. youre right o.s.o. co without racism, the naacp has no job.

To "Other Shoe", what the heck did America think when they put that sorry excuse for a President Elect in there in the first place? Did they think that everyone that disliked him would suddenly think he is great.LOL.And my answer to you is write whatever you want. As for the Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson wannabe troublemaker "Rev." William Loudmouth Barber, the NC State Chancellor SHOULD NOT have even given him a meeting.Thats whats wrong with the NAACP crowd now, they want to run everything.

go figure!!

NAACP.....I think people of ALL COLORS should sign up for the program since everything that involves African Americans is a problem if it suits them. I think I'll start the NAAWP and see where that gets me.

The secret service investigated and cleared these kids. The wall is inteded for free speech. At least they went to the free speech tunnel to let off some steam instead of doing something violent. It's funny how everyone gets in an uproar of Obama. You all did not care when sexist things were being said about Sarah Palin. You all need to get over yourselves!

Posted by: Other shoe on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:57 PM
lets put the shoe on the other foot here. how many of you would not have a problem if I went down to that tunnel and wrote "Shoot (insert your name) in the head"? I'm waiting for your answer.

The NAAWP is on the case. join now

freedom of speech does not include yelling fire in a crowded theater...nor would it protect someone threating to kill someone.

I can remember when freedom of speech meant something right or wrong. I heard many things said about Palin and McCain and hardly anthing about the messiah Obama. But it is OK, most of us are thick skinned enough. Now look at the NAACP and the Duke LaCross Players? I would tell them to take a hike like Jackson and Sharpton. Did they ever apoligize to them? Well, credibility is now gone. These are the groups that keep racism going in the country to justify their salaries. When they go, racisim will go with them.

John....free expression is one thing. Threatening to shoot someone (especially a presidential candidate) is another thing entirely. Apples & oranges here folks.

Posted by: Nick Location: Eastern NC on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:42 PM
With obama as president the naacp is going to become a 100 times worse than before. White Americans will have no freedom to say anything without sometime of ridicule.

I thought it said in the story "free expression" tunnel?

Posted by: Annie Nonomus Location: Greenville on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:37 PM
Three Words - FREEDOM OF SPEECH This tunnel is supposed to be a free speech zone, this is exactly what these students exercised.

If they started weeding out people that write racist slurs and make comments about shooting people like the police, there wouldn't be anybody in school that ever listed to rap music. It is a freedom of expression wall as long as you agree with the NAACP. Typical! Too bad, freedom of speech is limited only to a certain group of people

Posted by: brian Manning Location: greenville on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:33 PM
It's a free speech wall. Anyone is allowed to say anything they want. Have the naacp go down there and write on the wall the 4 students should be expelled. That's about all they can do. It's up to the university. The naacp should stay out of it, they didn't break a law. I don't agree with what they said, but they are entitled to say it.

Posted by: Kelly Location: NC on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:31 PM
It amazes me that an African American student is entitled to free speech, but heaven help anyone else...I am so sick of race motivated whining!!!

I am white and don't care much for the trouble making NAACP, but any student that does any type of graffiti should be punished. I do wonder why they are so against this. I have done a lot of traveling for work over the years and most not all graffiti I have seen are by black kids. Some of it has spoken against white people, but we don't complain. It seams this group is always so one sided and thats why I don't care for them. Not because they are black, some of my best friends who even come to my home and share family time with me are black. Some of them have even made comments against this group. If black people do something like this it is considered art, if a white person does it they call it racism.

If the wall is for people to say what they want and how they feel, they why punish these kids for saying what they felt. I think that it this is a problem then, their should not be a wall. I mean I understand that what they said might not be the right thing to say, but that it what the wall it about Free Speech.

Posted by: james Location: newbern on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:27 PM
when does it say that the naacp have the right to tell who can say what about the president look at what alot of people said about bush is obama any better. we do still have the 1st right to freedom of speech.like the college says the wall was put there for the freedom of speach and from what i am getting there was no death threats so leave it alone and move on

Posted by: what????? Location: nc on Nov 12, 2008 at 04:24 PM
Well if they actually wote the racist slurs and the comments about shooting our President in the head. THen they obviously are not learning anything in school anyway. People with so much anger should not be in the school! That is why we have so many school shootings...weed them out now!!!! Save the children who are there to learn and achive their dreams!

Also, when is the NAACP going to be prosecuted as an organization of hate? All the NAACP is the reverse of KKK(NAAWP) I was always told that if you go looking for a fight you can always find one. As long as the KKK, Arians, AND the NAACP are in existance there will never be a true end to racism. Racism is what drives these organizations and I will guarantee you this; None of these outfits are interested whatsoever in racial equality. I think with Obama in office the NAACP will feel they have a say in everything. From what I am hearing Obama say, I think they may be wrong. I am one white guy hoping that Obama will help put an end to all the racial rhetoric. We should all treat each other as brothers and sisters. The world would be a much better place.

Since when did the NAACP get the right to make ultimatums to government universities?
