A child is alive, but the man who saved him is dead. Witnesses say 33-year-old Kevin Mark Emerson from Virginia was in the surf on North Core Banks on Monday, when a rip current apparently swept three children from shallow water. The father of the children was able to rescue two of his kids from the waters off Harkers Island. Emerson rescued the third child, tossing him to the father before being swept into deeper water. Cape Lookout National Seashore Ranger Barry Munyan says this tragedy illustrates just critical it is to respect the water conditions.
Park staff and visitors pulled Emerson from the water and tried to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead later at Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City.
