It could be detrimental to the education of children and citizens in Beaufort County. That's how school board chairman Bryant Hardison described the current funding situation for Beaufort County Schools when he took the stand Wednesday at the courthouse in Washington. The Beaufort County School Board is battling the county commissioners, claiming it doesn't have enough funds to operate the schools this year.
The school board is seeking $2,900,000. For several hours Hardison was grilled on the stand as to how the board constructs its budget and how it was presented to county commissioners.
Hardison maintained he and other board members were as accurate as possible when they presented their budget request to county commissioners. The commissioners’ lawyers counter the items the school board is now saying it needs originally fell in the category of "would like to have." Testimony in the case continues Thursday.
