Sentinel chickens in Beaufort, Craven and Carteret Counties have tested positive for the West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. The Beaufort County Health Department is spraying for mosquitoes in the area where one of their chickens became infected with the West Nile Virus. The Beaufort County Health Department says seniors and young children are at the greatest risk of contracting mosquito-borne viruses. They recommend using repellents with DEET, wearing long sleeves and pants, and avoid being out during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
