NEW YORK (AP) -- Madonna doesn't do anything small.

The Material Girl celebrated Barack Obama's victory Tuesday night with a glittering rally of her own, leading thousands of fans at her concert in San Diego with a rousing introduction to her song "Express Yourself."

In a video posted on YouTube, Madonna claps her hands and declares, "This is a historical evening! ... We are lucky to be sharing it with each other!"

Other celebrity supporters of Obama echo Madonna's good cheer.

Oprah Winfrey, who cried during the celebration in Chicago's Grant Park, told the TV show "The Insider": "I was so, so, so excited and then just sort of a calm came over me. It feels like it actually is kind of real, so it feels great."

Asked what this means for the country, she said, "It means democracy at its finest. It's just the best. We did this. America did this."

George Clooney said in a statement: "I congratulate President-elect Obama on his historic victory, and now it's time to begin unifying the country so we can take on the extraordinary challenges that this generation faces."

Actress Scarlett Johansson, who stumped for Obama throughout his campaign, said the "overwhelming hope that Obama inspires is infectious."

"I've always maintained a strong faith in the power of Obama's positive campaign and am so proud of every citizen who took a stand, participated in the political process and insisted their voices be heard," Johansson said in a statement.

Singer Colbie Caillat, who cried when Obama won, said she thinks "our country is in safe hands."

Stars including Lindsay Lohan, Michael Moore and Kanye West posted messages online.

Reacting on her Myspace page, Lohan gushed, "OBAMA IS OUR PRESIDENT!" and said that everyone who voted, "no matter their choice ... should be proud for voting in the first place."

West, whose mother Donda died last November, posted a portrait of the president elect on his blog with the message: "HI MOM, OBAMA WON!"

Meanwhile, director-provocateur Moore responded on his Web site, saying, "Who among us is not at a loss for words? Tears pour out. Tears of joy. Tears of relief. A stunning, whopping landslide of hope in a time of deep despair."

Even more stunning: a concession from John McCain supporter Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who said Wednesday on TV's "The View" that she'll follow Obama's lead.

"I will jump in that line and support our president because that is what as an American I believe we should do," said Hasselbeck, who received a fist pump from co-host Whoopi Goldberg.

Ray, you are entitled to your opinion. I dont know why handouts would offend you, unless you are getting them maybe. What do you think, that just because Obama won that people[that didnt like him before] would magically start liking him all of a sudden?I dont feel that he won the election fairly, with all the Acorn crowd, Oprah, Chuck "The Schmuck" Schumer, and so forth. But as I said ,you have your opinion and you know what opinions are like.

Of course High Holy Priestess Oprah is thrilled. After all, she put Obama into office by buying the election, right?

just when we'd hope for reasonable comments even from those who were not in support, we get this absurd post with respect to Obama, Kenya and "handouts". You'd think the election behind us, there's be some growth. How sad.

I think that if the Kenyans think Obama is so great, that they are celebrating a 2 day holiday, send him over there, and let him take all the pinko commies in Hollywierd with him when he goes. The reason the Kenyans are celebrating so much is they know more handouts are coming. Its bad enough we have to keep up the people that are too sorry to work over here, now we are going to have to pay to keep up the Africa crowd too.

The list of "celebrities" in the WITN post looks like a veritable "who's who" of this country's village idiots.

I am an AMERICAN who loves his country. Obama will be my president in January of 2009. My hope is that he WILL work to unify our country. I also hope that he can find Sharpton and Jackson a real job now that their input is no longer needed. They racially fueled diatribes have been an insult to honest Americans for far too long. I also wish him well in dealing with a Congress that is utterly full of egotistical, arrogant demigods. I really expect no real change ever to occur in D.C. I hope that Obama proves me wrong, but I doubt it.

I wish Hollywood would run out of film.

Hey! I'm going to support Obama b/c he is our President and I can't do anything about it. I hope he proves me wrong, b/c I'm sick of the way this economy is. Sorry McCain but I really think you hurt yourself picking Palin. Everybody saw your age and then immediately got scared thinking she could become president. Heck, I voted McCain but by no means do I think she should be President one day. Obama, I hope you know what you got yourself into!

funny though that we all took the time to comment that we dont care...

Posted by: Chris Location: Greenville on Nov 5, 2008 at 04:44 PM
Lindsay Lohan... isn't she made fun of by the media all the time, for things like driving drunk and other irresponsible decisions. Plus, do people really care what the rich, no-worries celebrities think. They're rich... healthcare, taxes, gas prices, house mortgages and social security apply to them. If you vote based upon a celebrities opinion, I sure hope you're rich.

Why is this news. I care more about what the average people think. I'm glad they think like me. OBAMA. Today I feel like I live in a better place.

I only care what Chuck Norris says. He invented the term "lame duck"...it's the last thing you do before you get roundhouse kicked to the face. He also invented the "fillibuster"...however, it is referred to as the "killibuster" when Chuck Norris does it. He invented the "Red States"...they were all blue until Chuck Norris arrived and bloodied them up. He also invented the term "Blue States"...shortened from the official term "Black and Blue States"... Yes, Chuck Norris is the only celebrity I care about, and I am happy he has decided to let us exist another four years.

Posted by: jo Location: Greenville on Nov 5, 2008 at 02:57 PM
Who really cares what Hollywood thinks!

Posted by: Dwayne Location: Greenville on Nov 5, 2008 at 02:56 PM
Politics from Hollywood is like theology from the Strip in Vegas.

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 5, 2008 at 02:49 PM
I don't know why everyone makes a big deal out of what celebrities think when it comes to politics. People need to think for themselves.
