Firefighters from two counties battled a blaze Wednesday afternoon near Old Washington Road on the Pitt-Beaufort County line. Six fire departments were called to put out the fire on Lilly Lane that spread from at least a dozen mobile homes being salvaged, according to fire officials.
People that live near the area were evacuated.
Edward Lee, chief of the Clark's Neck Fire Department, says the fire began in one unit and quickly spread to the next. Lee says a nearby swimming pool helped firefighters replenish their water supply.
Another challenge for firefighters was the heat and humidity. The owner of the property where the fire began was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital as a precaution. Rescue workers said he appeared to be in stable condition.
