Exploring U.S.S. Monitor

An exploration will start Monday to map the wreckage of a famed Civil War gunboat off our coast. The U.S.S. Monitor navy ship sank in a storm about 16 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras in December of 1862. It was the navy's first iron-clad ship. Researchers from Connecticut and elsewhere will head up the project to help learn how to protect the Monitor and other wrecks from
future damage.
