Shots rang out at an Eastern Carolina courthouse Wednesday after authorities say an inmate stole a gun from a correctional officer. It happened in Jackson in Northampton County around 9:30 in the morning. In the end, the inmate was shot and killed. A deputy was wounded. Authorities say 37-year-old Willie Forrest was being transferred from Jackson to a prison in Raleigh when he began struggling with deputies. Authorities say he grabbed one deputy's gun and wounded the officer, then was fatally shot by another deputy. The wounded officer is in good condition. Correction department records show Forrest was serving more than 56 years in prison for attempted murder and other convictions including kidnapping and assault.
